Queen of Sweden

I'm delighted to show you all the first blooms of Queen of Sweden. Isn't she magnificent?

I have 12 of these bushes, lined up as a hedge, leading to the area of my garden called the Queen's Court.

So far the court consists of the Duchesse de Brabant, the Duchesse de Gramont, the Duke of Edinburgh, Marchesa Boccella, and Madame Joseph Schwartz, which all leads to the two duelling queens, La Reine and La Reine Victoria.

The queens do not know, of course, that Mademoiselle de Sombreuil is just around the corner, ready to overturn the thrown and claim the crown for herself.

Who will win? Tune in this Fall to see the ending of the saga of the Duelling Queens.

Very pretty. I love the way the buds look in the first picture. You say you have this as a hedge, so does it get pretty tall? How is the cutting quality?

You're garden sounds very interesting and pretty. I hope you'll post some pics of the court and the dueling queens. Is there a king?

Hi Grace, it can be really hard to time a rose to an event. I'd suggest you find something that is known for blooming often, rather than blooming in flushes, so that there are likely to be flowers on it when the event happens. Maybe look at some polyantha roses. I grow Marie Pavie, and she blooms often for me, and has a wafting fragrance. I haven't grown the miniature rose Sweet Chariot, but have read that it has a tendency to drape, which can look pretty in a container. Another thought would be to go to a garden center shortly before the event, and choose a rose that has a lot of buds set. That might be the simplest way to be sure that you give your friend a rose that is blooming. Also, if you order a rose over the internet it may be smaller than you would like, or could arrive defoliated, so would take more time to look really good.

Ok, Y'all gave me great suggestions! I have ordered some Salvia from here Colonia Creek Farm - I ordered 2 each of Omaha Gold Hummingbird Sage (s. guaranitica) and Mexican Bush Sage 'Midnight' (salvia leucantha 'Midnight') Regarding Lavender, I have tried several types in the past in pots with well draining soil and they look great until about mid-May. Then they just die no matter what I try. It's just too humid and rainy here for them. I'm going to look into Shasta or Becky Daisies, more Echinacea (I have a few), cranesbill (boy are these expensive!! 15.00+ at all the online plant sites I've seen. Cranesbill may be too expensive for me! If anyone wants to trade some divisions of their plants for either a Brugmansia Frosty Pink (rooted and ready to go!) or a Loquat seedling, let me know! Thanks!

I would hold off and see if the next new growth is cleaner. Bayer is a fungal spray so it shouldn't have damaged the roses. I see the label is for flowers and other plants. What would worry me is that it is also for insects. I think it may also kill bees. I know that anything labelled as an insecticide, is going to have a chemical that is stronger than a fungicide. Some roses are naturally too sensitive for sprays and will re-act. This not the first time I have heard of roses not liking the Bayer spray. If you try it on another rose and get the same re-action, perhaps it is too strong for some of your roses. Try deleting it a little ands if that works better.

Hi, Lisa Su, and Friends, I guess I caught rose fever and took to ordering and planning more roses for spring in last few days to add to above orders.... I started looking up your roses and found ones I wished to add to my gardens... so I have ordered a few more also..... Souvenir de la Malmaison, Boubon 1843 rose, strong fragrance...nice big bush w/big blooms....for my femce border... Clotilde Soupert, polyantha , nearly thornless, strong moderate fragrance...actually may be a small rose that blooms in intense clusters like The Fairy...for my front hillside ground cover... And I’m planning on adding China Doll polyantha and Elegant Fairy Tale Roses to lower part of back yard hill, waiting for them to come available to order.... Oh, to plan my dream gardens. I now am up to 88 roses... roses in front yard...roses down side of house and lining back yard and some on hill by spring.... 20 new roses so far coming to plant....fun..fun.... Hi Annabeth,

QofS grows quite tall and wide here in Texas. This is her second year, and last year she grew to around 4x3.

I had trimmed off a foot earlier this February, to encourage more branching and flowers, and so far she's looking to be a very healthy and robust hedge.

She cuts very well compared to the other Austins. I believe she lasts approximately 3 days in a vase if you cut her when she's not fully open. Very little fragrance or none at all, as my nose cannot detect a fragrance.

I haven't found a King, so if anyone has a suggestion on a King(s), I'd really appreciate it.

Vuwugarden, I love your concept of The Queen's Court! I love all the roses you have mentioned for that part of your garden too. Can there be a Count? If so, how about The Comte de Chambord joining the ladies? Anne Boleyn might want to join the court as well. Please post photos when they are blooming in The Queen's Court. You have been an inspiration to me with all this.

Thanks, Juliet! That's a great idea to include a Count.

Can you imagine the different twist and turns to the storyline when I add the Comte de Chambord Â a love triangle amongst La Reine, La Reine Victoria, and the Comte.

Thanks again for the suggestion. This garden is located on the west side of our property where itÂs a complete blank slate. So much potentialÂso much to DO!

Vuwu, I don't grow it and know next to nothing about it except its name: Rose du Roi or Rose of the King. There is also a Rose du Roi a Fleurs Blanches (rose of the king with white flowers) and Rose du Roi a Fleurs Poupres (rose of the king with purple flowers). Maybe someone that grows these can tell you about them.

Not to be pedantic, but the Comte de Chambord really was a king. He was the heir to the throne of the decapitated Louis XVI. However he missed being king because, c. 1870 (?), when offered the throne, he and his Royalist supporters refused to accept the French tricolor Flag (the Royal flag was pure white), which the French people had grown attached to and didn't want to give up. So the French nation remained a republic.
