It does look very similar... Although I don't remember seeing any berries on it last year, and the trunk looks different?

I think it's probably a type of viburnum. The flowers look right and they smell bad when bloomimg.

Compare your bush to Nannyberry, Viburnum lentago. It's said to smell of wet sheep.

I think it may be that viburnum. I was reading about it, and it says it often develops multiple trunks if left to its own. I don't think landscaping maintenance was a priority for the previous homeowners. I had to dig that island out from a jungle of weeds. I'm worried now though because it says they get up to 30 ft tall.... So the weeping cherry tree probably won't survive that since its so close. It is pretty but for the past week I've been going outside thinking, what is that smell? It almost smells like cat urine. Then I figured out it was coming from te bush... I guess at least it doesn't last long... I will have to look for berries this fall to ID it for sure....

My first inclination was also Viburnum. But the Viburnums have round flower petals and the OP close up pic shows the flower petals coming to a point.

Do you know the color of the fruit ? Can you please post a close up of a leaf ?

Rugbyhukr, not sure why,but your google search showed a lot of other varieties of Viburnum flowers. I re-did a search with quote marks, and the flowers doo look like the OP's flowers.

Here is a picture of the leaves. I don't recall there being fruit on it last year but that doesn't mean there wasn't. Sorry for the delay! The individual flowers in the clusters have 4 petals. The leaves are in pairs across from each other on the stem.

I think it's a Cornus species by the veins. Cornus drummondii grows in your area as well as other species. That's why I asked about fruit color.

Thank you :) You guys are amazing! I think you're right. It looks likes the cornus drumondii - roughleaf dogwood. I can't find much from people complaining about the smell... but I don't think the stink lasts long. It's not as strong as the bradford pears (we had some of those along the pathways at my college - and everyone hated them). This thing does have a smell though... it's pretty gross. I don't remember it stinking for very long last year though - so I'm thinking probably only while it's flowering which is only a couple of weeks. I've got a dogwood tree out front - it gets much larger flowers (which it has now) and fruit that gets bright red and spiky and looks kind of like something out of dr. suess. I love that tree - and it does not smell!

The other good news is that this one doesn't seem like it will get too much bigger - so my weeping cherry seems to be safe for now.

Thanks a lot for your help again! Part of the fun of moving into this house has been figuring out what all the plants are. Everything I've planted since I've moved in, I've kept the tags/receipts on. So someday if I decide to move, I'll pass it on to the next homeowner - who probably won't care... but I like to know what's growing in my yard!
