Again, thanks all. I continue to learn more with each commentary. I should explain that my initial post was rather abbreviated, having little experience with this forum. The reasoning for the boxwood is that there are already at least 8 individual boxwood in the back tier. I decided to add more instead of digging old ones out. When I first bought this house the boxwood was over 10 feet tall with no lower growth. It was intertwined with Ivy, 3 fences and an assortment of trash, weeds, thatch etc. ItÂs taken this long to get to the bottom. IÂve managed to salvage some of the boxwood (re-growing off of old root stock) and pulling out the stumps from the 40+ year old DEAD boxwood was so much work, IÂve decide to add more than take more out. Plus, IÂm still into the idea of a water break to stand between my roses and my neighbor. His over-watering and hosing off his patio doesnÂt change, even after discussions. I considered the 3 at a time method ala David Austin recommendations until I spoke with the guy at my local nursery. Seems that if you plant them in mass in LA, they get HUGE. One seems to be enough for our heat. I do plan to cut back 1/3 every blush per Austin recommendations to see if I can keep them bushy. My current AustinÂs are not getting that treatment and they are leggy. I still havenÂt figured out how to imbed photoÂs into this stream but work continues on prepping the bed. IÂve dug away everything that is in the front and am about to till the bed to get out the mass of tuber roots from some evil plant that I call Asparagus fern. The back is clean with Boxwood being the only remaining part. Both layers need about 4" of top soil removed to get the level below grade of the planters. Next step, till, drip system and then plant. Am also considering an under-planting to cut down on weeds and not have the sterile bed with roses & dirt that is so common in LA.

I would take the hail if if meant snow for the Sierra Nevada or to fill up some dry lakes. I would sacrifice every one of my spring roses in order to be able to water the plants later on. We are removing roses because there will not be enough to go around. Remember that 'which rose is your favorite game' ? Well it's happening here where only the favorites are going to get any water. These are desperate days. My hope is that a big tree planting effort gets underway to try to get more co2 out of the air. I don't wish more extreme weather for anyone.

Since I love Abraham Darby, I've asked the same question. In addition to the excellent suggestions above, you could consider a relative of Abraham Darby. One of his parents is Aloha, which is deemed by many to be an excellent rose. Abraham Darby also has many descendants, which may have some of his qualities. Take a look through them, and see if any catch your fancy. Some of them may have very different color and/or growth habit though. A quick look through HelpMeFind's list, includes in his first generation descendants, some of them Austins, others not, but the ones that I recognize: Crown Princess Margareta, Golden Celebration, Janet Inada, Jude the Obscure, Marianne (a once bloomer but rated very highly in this forum), Oshun (which is ADxAD), Pat Austin, Spirit of Freedom, William Morris. Second generation descendants include: Alnwick Castle, Christopher Marlowe, Crocus Rose, Emmanuel, Janet, Jubilee Celebration, Wildeve. David Austin Roses has seemed to try to create roses that are similar to AD or perhaps they are trying to create an "improved" AD. These are roses like Princess Alexandra of Kent, Boscobel (in my garden has more basals than AD and is a shorter plant so far; also has a very different fragrance), Eustacia Vye, Emily Bronte, which though of a different quality from AD, have brought in a similar color scheme of apricot with pink and yellow shadings that aren't as common in other breeders. Sonia Rykiel is also thought to be a descendant of Abraham Darby, as one of her parents is the same cross as AD, although it is not specified as AD. Sonia's flowers are more pink than AD but plants are of a similar growth habit in my garden. Princesse Charlene de Monaco's flowers can look a lot like AD when they first open, but in my garden fade much more quickly, and plants have a more vinous form. AD tends to retain a cup shaped form to the flowers, whereas PCdM does not. Also, don't forget about Evelyn, which although being of different breeding, has similar floral qualities, but has a different growth habit from AD (AD tends to be more stocky with thick canes, and Evelyn tends to be more willowy, like comparing a gymnast to a ballerina). now that I look at the 4th photo closely I think maybe I got it wrong, not Deuil de Dr.D., probably Mrs. B. R. Cant (almost positive). Love her too but DdeDD has the more intense fragrance and deeper color.

Beautiful photos! I was especially interested in Napoleon, which isn't often photographed. It's a very lovely, airy rose.

Thanks Ingrid. Napoleon underwhelmed me compared to other roses in the garden...until this winter/spring when it put on that show.

Napoleon doesn't have the flashy color of Archduke Charles or the petal lushness of Mrs. B.R.Cant but it's a keeper. I'm sure I bought it because I saw someone's photo of it and it must've been GardenWeb 2-3 years ago.

Oh! That is a great picture of Mrs. Dudley Cross! Mine is still immature so I'm crossing my fingers that she'll produce those gorgeous bicolors soon!

Denise, I just got Napoleon last November, and I think I'm going to like him. I like the solid pink in a China. Sadly, I took out Archduke Charles today. He was stark naked. I had heard he gets BS. Does yours?

Archdukes Charles is planted next to Napoleon (not the best idea but who knows what was happening at that time haha). No my AC hasn't shown BS (cross fingers). Right now the only ones with BS are Tamora in a large pot and Mmme Isaac Pereiere in the ground.
The mornings this spring have been amazingly cool, with dew on leaves, perhaps that's the reason. I haven't had BS much in the past, too blazingly hot and sunny.
