'This Bud's for you'.....the beauty of buds, Part 1

Does anyone even come over here to the gallery anymore?

It seems there hasn't been much traffic here which is unfortunate because this is the time of year lots of us need photos to get us through until rose season....(which for me is a LONG way off...mid-June to be exact).

This past summer I took a lot of closeups of rose BUDS, which to me have their own special beauty but are rarely shown. Obviously a fully-opened rose is the big prize, but there is something innocent, hopeful, and lovely about the buds as they emerge which I tried to capture.

I have to do this in two separate postings since I did

take a lot of photos. I hope whomever may come over here and take a look enjoys the show!

Congrats b123h. Cochleata is a very rewarding plant; mine has a year-old spike that's still reliably putting out flowers, with a new spike due to bloom very soon. Only drawback (in my opinion) is that the plant is rather large and getting larger! See if you can detect any scent; I get a faint spicy fragrance in the mornings if the air is warm. By the way, you're right about the flower: it is nonresupinate, or lip-uppermost. All orchid flowers start off this way, but most go through a 180 deg rotation during development (resupination) to place the lip downward. E. cochleata and friends are one of the exceptions. Richard, I thought this one had been moved to Prosthechea cochleata from Anacheilium? Or has it been moved back? Some still know it as Epidendrium cochleatum, the original name.

In hot weather, I usually assume first that HEAT is the problem--the roses are thirsty and burning up! However, I would not recommend the Bayer Rose and Flower Insect Killer (nor most of the Bayer products), They specialize in overkill--so maybe we shouldn't be surprised that the tender buds and necks are not doing well. By the way, I doubt the Bayer Insect Killer will actually do much to kill off JBs--that is mostly a marketing ploy. And as for the other insects listed, most of them can be handled in less harmful ways (midge being the exception, I believe). Just ask here when you have a problem with, say, aphids, and we can give lots of good advice without resorting to Bayer Insect Killer. There is only one Bayer product I recommend--their Bayer Advanced Disease Control for Roses, Flowers, and Shrubs--for blackspot and related leaf diseases. I'm serious --that is the only ONE I recommend. But even then, just ask here and we can suggest some ways to keep blackspot from taking over your rose garden--without using sprays. (By the way--I can only get the Disease Control at Lowe's or online.) About your immediate problem, I suggest quit using the Bayer Rose and Flower Insect Killer and give your roses more water in hot weather. Let us know how that works out. Debra all your bud kings / queens are beautiful too! Love that August Cherry pic! And always love the bicolor / bitone look! I don't know if I am gonna count, my days of 35-40 buds are gone, they are so crowded, and I have never had so few buds on plants as this year. Maybe Lullaby Baby as it builds buds and kinda always is among my best. And Isle of Patmos looks pretty well-budded. I can name the worst though, Berry Delicious - 1 scape with 2 buds, and Nature's Crown - 4 scapes with 1 bud per scape (it dropped all the others as it usually does)

Celeste, your rose bud photos are breathtakingly beautiful. I especially like the buds of the moss roses and out of this class the buds of Crested Sweetheart are my favorites. They are so special looking!

Do you and/or others have any idea if Crested Sweetheart would grow and bloom for me here in zone 10, CA? The only moss rose that I have so far is Salet. I got it as a band last year and it has grown well but not bloomed for me, yet. I am wondering if this is only because the band is still too young and small or if moss roses simply need more winter chill to bloom properly than my climate is able to offer.

Crested Sweetheart is not a pure moss rose so it may very well grow & bloom fine for you there. It was bred by Ralph Moore from a modern rose 'Little Darling' crossed with the old moss rose 'Crested Moss' (Chapeau de Napoleon, whose photo I posted as well). It does climb and will need a structure for it to scramble up onto. Even here in my cold zone it is very vigorous. It is only once-blooming like its moss parent. As a bonus, it is fragrant. The blooms are large, very full & quartered.

Celeste, thanks for the detailed info regarding Crested Sweetheart and the lovely photo of the open flower. Everything sounds really good the only thing that is holding me back to get it is that it is a once bloomer. With my small garden I am really hesitant to plant another once blooming rose... Maybe I will enjoy CS on photos, only!

Bless you, Celeste, in a winter when I have so few photos of my own taken last season you have come through (once again!) I just love the buds of Leda - like little kisses, they are. And I adore long sepals - I think Johasine Hanet is a beauty and I have never even seen the open flower! The buds of Crested Sweetheart are awesome and I was wondering about its parentage, having Chapeau de Napoleon myself. Thanks for answering that question.
What a wonderful study; I can't wait to open part 2. :-)
