Comments (10)Thanks for the replies. Im not sure what to make of the figs slow progress, by all accounts they love hot weather, and even if they didn’t the last 2 weeks have been fairly mild in comparison to the first two weeks with temperatures sitting between 25-30oC (77-86F), only getting above 30 once, which should be fairly ideal. Fertilising may be an issue, although they have been getting their half strength solution quite regularly, sometimes 2x a week. If it isn’t going to hurt them I can give them a full strength measure at their next watering and see if that kicks them into action. If I could make a guess, I would say it comes down to water, since the plants wilted whilst the soil feels damp to touch (at least in the top few cms) I would say there is possibly patches of dry mix or, as I left some of the original soil mix around the root ball, this may have dried out, or isn’t staying wet. I have been silly and haven’t once checked with a dowel or anything, but believe the soil is probably quite wet now as last week we had a few days solid rain in a row. If this theory is correct then hopefully it should become evident quite quickly as the plants will start putting out growth again (I hope). This morning, despite being watered last on Saturday, all my pots feel wet, almost soaked, right on the top. After work I will stick a skewer in and see if this is the case through the whole mix. My other thoughts were that I had been over fertilising and the plants could not take up water, but I just don’t know that a high enough level of salts could have built up in such a small amount of time, especially since at each watering I let a fair bit of water flow out the pots. @shazaam I am fertilising only with the regular miracle grow for all plants, with some added vinegar and Epson salts for the blueberries. I am not sure what N source is used, but will check and see if it ammonia or nitrate based. I have been searching for a soluble acid loving formula, but although it is on their website I haven’t been able to locate in stores. Perhaps if it is nitrate based I will see if I can find any ammonia based product somewhere. I added some slow release acid loving Osmocote when mixing, which is likely to have an ammonia base, but I am sure someone stocks a soluble somewhere in my city…...See MoreBud after 30 days
Comments (12)Frank, Nice graft. I did a couple dozen peach grafts in June (They were T-buds not chip grafts.) They all callused in OK, but all but one of the buds was dark brown or black after I unwrapped them. I did have one bud green like the one your picture shows above, but after I unwrapped it, it turned brown. We had 100+ temperatures a few days after I made the grafts. It was just too hot and never did cool down. Because they seemed to callus in, I went ahead and cut the top growth to try to force the grafts, but nothing came of it. The rootstocks pushed new growth, but none of the grafted buds did anything. I mark my grafts with masking tape and a Sharpie, but there's probably a better way....See MoreBig green beans (1/4 inch dia or so)
Comments (3)OK, I've got just under 3 lbs of these big (some are a little bulgy) beans snapped, rinsed, drained and in the fridge. I have to pick up DD, but I picked these 24 hours ago and want to do something with them when I get home. I decided against the 3-bean salad since I don't have limas, don't like celery, and onions are probably going soft in the basement (I don't care for onions anyway). I don't want all dilly beans, can I snap these shorter like for 3 bean salad, use the dilly bean recipe but instead of dill do a mix of mustard and celery seed, maybe a little sugar to have beans to mix into a 3-bean salad in the future? How much mustard and celery seed to use per pint in place of the 1-2 dill heads (figuring 1-2 tsp dill seed is equivalent to 1 head, I think 1 tsp of each per pint might be good, would 2 tsp or 1 Tbsp each mustard and celery seed be too much)? I think I would end up with 4 pints. Ball uses 1 Tbsp mustard seed and only 1 tsp celery seed (but 2C celery) for 5-6 pints of bean salad. Not sure about the garlic for a 3-bean salad - there isn't any in the Ball recipe. So I think I'll skip it. Ball uses sugar b/c their brine is almost 3/4 vinegar - lots of low-acid veggies in there (onion, pepper, celery, limas). The Dilly Bean recipe is half vinegar so I'm thinking just use ACV and skip the sugar?...See MoreKumquat Fukushu: to bare root & repot in 5.1.1 or not so late?
Comments (16)So I went and fully bare-rooted and re-potted my new Fukushu this Saturday. The event took place immediately after I tried to make some holes in the mix to help with the water flowing and observed that the mix is so compacted that the wood stick could not pass through the mix. How can I water this tree properly with such a dense medium? Denise, I'm in Belgium, and a lot of the citrus trees available on the markets are mainly from Italy. Vladimir, I soaked the root ball for more than 1 hour and it was still very very hard to make the clay go away...it help a lot to loosen the outside layer of mix while the middle part remained hard as rock. So I removed all the fruits, the mix was ready (already at room temperatures), prepared the new pot (from 5L to 11L). The rest is in the pictures: to be continued......See Moreponcirusguy6b452xx
