Not worth pinching these pennies

So, Big-Name companies are trying to use coupons to promote "penny pinching"...

Note that cold cereals are a very bad investment: you get more nourishment from enriched whole-grain toast with a glass of milk on the side. Cooked whole grains are even better, provided you don't load them up with sugar.

Milk, if your bod can tolerate it, IS a bargain... but the cost per gallon has almost doubled in the past few years. This might be one place that would be worthwhile using a coupon. Note that on a gallon-to-gallon basis, reconstituted dried skim milk is usually (not always but mostly) much, much, much less expensive than the gallon from the store. Locally, best price for 1 gal of skim from the store is $3.79; I'm still using from a box of dried skim bought a couple months ago for 10.49, which works out to less than $1.32 per gallon.

C's soup will be better for you than a packet of potato chips... if you are careful to read the ingredients label. There is no question that homemade soups are better for you, especially if you have to watch sodium [salt] intake. Homemade is also considerably less expensive, even after using a coupon for a can of the other stuff. (Home-made will usually cost from 10¢ to $1 per serving, or from one-tenth to one-half the cost of a serving from the can.) The grilled cheese sandwich Krft is promoting is .... probably VERY high in fat calories --unless you make it with dry toast-- and no butter, which then isn't really a grilled cheese sandwich. OTOH, skim milk cheese does provide some calcium, a form of protein, and a dose of Vitamin D.

Kool-aid. Do you know that this product makes an excellent fabric dye for woolens? Pretty good on cotton, too. Frankly, I'm not into using it for a beverage, however, it tastes best when made with white sugar... but I make sweetened tea with 1/4 that much sugar. Both drinks rate really low on providing nourishment for the bod.

Sigh. How about a coupon for some real stuff that's actually good for us? It isn't pinching the right pennies to spend money -even with coupons- for foodstuff that doesn't do a good job of nourishing us.
