Yeah, Texas should have played SMU, Western Kentucky, Tulane, and Washington to pump up their stats. They could have done all that in one afternoon.

You'd be mad too if you got jumped by a team you beat and have to watch Big Game Bob and his Sooners choke in another BCS game. Here is how they have proudly represented the Big 12 the last 5 years:

2007 Fiesta - LOSS (To West Virginia... come on)
2006 Fiesta - LOSS
2005 DNP in BCS
2004 Orange - LOSS
2003 Sugar - LOSS

The good thing about this is if Texas wins big and the BCS title game is lackluster, there will be a question mark about who is the legit NCAAF champion. We need controversial years like this to bring about a playoff system!

Well to be honest to UT fans, I understand your position and feel your pain. But it all comes down to Big 12 rules which may change next year.

For example with two simple rule changes would have prevented this dilemma.

1. Is the Big 12 Championship game rules. North Division and South Division region leaders playoff. It should be the two best teams in the Big !2, not a North South thing. None of the North region deserved to play for the Big 12 Championship this year.

2. Allow Big 12 teams to play each other in a bowl game. Some of the best games ever were Big 8 rematches like the legendary OU/NE in the Orange bowl. One of the best games ever.

Change either rule and you would have a rematch game between the 2 best teams in the Big 12, OU and TEXAS TECH :-) Oh well UT fans, there is always next year. See you in Miami.

Yeah I guess Texas Tech wasn't as good as they seemed. But UT was better than they seemed. Not that it balances but I'm just sayin.

OU, TTU, UT were, safely speaking, three of the top ten teams in the country.

Who wins depends on where they are playing, injuries, who has been playing who, etc. Texas doesn't beat OU if they play them in Norman. Tech might in Dallas.

Its all about a silly popularity contest based on spostswriters and polls and the "member institutions" all getting their share of the money spread around until we have a real playoff like all other college sports do.

I donÂt think you will ever see a college football playoff nor do want one. I also think the NCAA wants one either for the same two reasons.

A playoff would come right at final exam time. Student priority is school and do not need to be on a practice field or travelling to the next game. They need that time to study and prepare.

Football is a brutal sport that comes with severe risk and very hard on the body. All it takes is that one game to end a potential NFL career, and the NCAA is not going to expose kids to that extra risk. The story has been repeated too many times. For example a young Miami Hurricanes by the name of Dwayne Johnson had a very promising career in the NFL until a game in 1991 ended it all. He played for two years in the Canadian Football league but was cut in less then two years; his injury prevented him from playing. Luckily for him he got a contract with the WWE like a lot of injured college football players and made a name for himself which you may know him as THE ROCK.

If not, and like you say, schooling is top priority, why does U of T lower admission standards / tests and skills for student athletes?

As a resident of TX, I assume you do know how hard it is for an "out of state" student, like my son, to admit of U of T.

Bowl games were never intended to or designed to determine a champion. They are designed and intended to extend the holiday tourist season.

Sure fans and some schools want a playoff system, fortunately IMO they do not get to decide. The most important thing is the kids education, not a trophy.

The smaller colleges have a full blown football playoff that goes on for weeks. And, honest, their players are neither unduly maimed nor flunked out of school by the process.

PS, its always dangerous to discuss serious topics like politics, religion - or D-1 college football playoffs with anyone you want to keep as a friend.... ;)

Well I find it amusing how I-AA (or FCS) has a 16 team playoff, and no one utters a word about missing school work. These athletes are much less likely to end up in the NFL, so they probably value their education even more.

I hate the B(C)S crap now - Utah got screwed because they are not in a "real" conference. Look at the Big East now that Miami, Va Tech, and BC left - Champ Cincy? Come on! Most of the bowl games were like watching September match ups - YAWN...

Well, imho, the big college bowl championship series doesn't make any decisions about what to do based on what is best for the student athletes, or what the fans want, or what is most likely to fairly decide who is the best team in their ranks.

It is about one thing - splitting the profits.

And, nothing much is going to change so long as fans are gullible enough to provide profits or the feds prosecute the monopoly. Which, so long as most fans don't insist on shaking things up that involve good old Alma Mater U, won't happen politically.

And the guys in charge of splitting the profits understand all of the above clear as a bell. When will the fans of major college football wise up to that and quit settling for allowing it to be the only sport that doesn't have a real playoff? It looks like that will be no time soon.

Get over it. The only component of the game that is complaining is the TV-watching fan, who brings precious little skin to the process. The traditional powerhouse schools, the schools looking for revenue, the TV networks, the $5000 "booster clubs" to get a decent seat, etc. like things the way they are and are all in line before the small fan and local media grunts that need to stir up a story for their pay. And while I wish I could laugh at the idea of the Feds getting involved, I've learned to never state that our government will never set a new low for paying attention to stuff that is not their problem instead of doing their real job.

If by skin, you mean most of the money that supports college athletics, I'd say they deserve to have their concerns addressed. After all, they are the paying customer.

And, I haven't run in to many fans in the stands that don't want a playoff too. Just because they are willing to take what they can get for their ticket money doesn't mean they don't favor more.

EVERY poll I've seen in the last decade of college football fans have a large, large majority wanting what every other college sport has. A real champ from a real playoff.
