Cutting flower spikes of to get a Phal some rest

Hey everyone,
I have been having a dilemma, I have a beautiful Phal. Baldans Caleidoscope which was a rescuee, and since it boomed the first time at the beginning of last December it never stopped having flowers on two spikes. My concern is that its a very long time for the plant and I'm thinking I shouldn't wait for the flowers to drop of naturally and just cut the spikes and let it rest and accumulate strength for next time.
Is my thinking correct?
