Hi, I too need water hyacinths and lettuce. I have hostas, iris, carpet phlox to trade if you want. Just did pond spring cleanout and need floaters to hide the koi from the egrets! Will trade or pay postage for hyacinths.

Fine fescue can build a thatch mat from over fertilizing at rates fit for perennial ryegrass. And likewise the rye from overfertilizing for it's needs. The bentgrass if not fertilized does the "mat" thing mainly due to the way it can spread with stolons. The mat is not very dense unless fertilized. But it can be aggressive. It can blow in via seeds, or because lawn service do not wash their mowing equipment in-between properties. As far as clover - here's my personal opinion. I like clover. In the back yard at least. Dear Joe, Thank you very much for your inquiry. White clover (or any species of plant for that matter) can be introduced into your lawn. The key is to not favor the existing lawn with inputs (water fertilizer etc) that favor the existing lawn over the new seed. White clover can be established into an existing lawn in the fall, and it is the second best time of year. The best time is very early spring when the grass is growing at its very least. Resist all temptation to fertilize the lawn after overseeding as this will favor only the existing grasses. You will need a little water, but use it very sparingly the first 2 weeks after planting. If you decide to kill existing vegetation and apply the clover over the whole yard, it will not be necessarily a bad thing, but you will need mix the seed with sand or Milorganite fertilizer as a carrier to help spread the seed evenly. Clover is great for attracting honey bees. With your active outdoor lifestyle, clover is going to be a problem. Where do you live? Bermuda might not be the best choice.
