I don't have a pic of the leaves, except the small leaf that you see in the photo. But judging by that leaf and by the shape of the flowering part, you're most likely right. It's Sorrel. This is not the first time I've fallen in love with a weed!!! These are growing en masse in the center median along Highway 18 in Western Washington. Just amazingly gorgeous reds interspersed with the greens as you're driving by. Breathtaking. I guess I don't care if it's a weed! Thank you. Teresa

I have been growing canna for the last 20 years. I have both the red leaf ones and the green leaf ones. Please listen to what Ken said. Depending upon were you are located, you may have to dig up the bulbs in fall. I started with only a few of these bulbs and now I give to my friends & local greenhouse for them to sell as I am overwhelmed with too many of these bulbs. They are a beautiful plant in my opinion.

Castor Bean, Ricinus communis. Not native to North America. Gorgeous plant but the seeds are highly poisonous and not an ideal plant if you have young ones around. And yes, this is the one castor oil is made from. FataMorgana

@gargwarb: That is exactly what they are. Thank you so much for helping me out. I have since been able to also identify winged aphids as well as whiteflies on this plant....I guess I got the insect motherload. I share a back porch with several other units here in the city of Chicago, and who knows if we are passing invaders to each others plants. Anyway, I read up on Spinosad, and the local nursery had that plus Espoma's Earth-tone. I went with the Earth-tone first, as I know their products are for Organic plants. Captain Jack (the brand name of the Spinosad product they had) was marked as using Spinosad as an organic solution, but didn't seem to list the other inactive ingredients, so I figured I would try Earthtone first, as it lists thrips, aphids, and whiteflies on its label. I only mention all this in case anyone else happens across this question and it provide any help. Again, thank you, and let's see what next hurdle this gardening adventure brings! -Adam
