Fall leaves in my garden, can I leave them there like a mulch?

I have leaves all over my lawn and in the garden area from the fall leaves. As I'm raking them up, I'm wondering about the leaves in the garden plot soil. Can I just leave them there for over the winter, so that it acts like a mulch on the soil. Or is that a bad idea and a poor excuse for not raking the leaves out of the flower garden plots? Is there pros and cons to doing this?

Leaves are good for soil so sure you can leave them there. Whole leaves tend to mat and clump together though. Not really a big deal over the winter, but they have to be raked up come spring to plant in the soil.

One method that removes the need for a rake is to run the leaves over with a lawn mower. A mulch mower works best, but a regular mower does the same thing with a few passes. Just chop them up and leave them lay. They will decompose and help the soil.

On a lawn you want to limit the leaves so they aren't so thick they smother the turf, but in the garden they can be as thick as you want.

The leaves that fall from the trees growing in my yard get mulch mowed back into the soil they came from to feed the soil the trees are growing in. I pick up leaves on excursions to town to shred for mulching my planting beds and to make compost. As justaguy indicated whole leaves tend to matt together and make a somewhat impervious barrier to plant growth and if possible you should shred those leaves some way. A rotary mower is a fairly good machine to use for that if some simple precautions are taken first. You do need a fairly solid stand for the mower, blocks ot keep the mower from moving without interfering with raking the leaves under the mower deck. A means of catching the leaves as the mower mulches them, a cage of some kind, or a bag on the mower so you can pick them up as you mow so you need not rake them.

I'm uncertain what you mean about removing the kernel. I bring mine indoors, still together in their grape-like bunch, as soon as the spathe is dry. We have warm weather longer here, so I may be letting mine stay outside, on the plant, longer than you can. I let mine dry, indoors, all in their cluster. After about two months, I sow them indoors with good light. They come up in about a month and look like grass. The seed ( looks like a grape in a bunch of grapes) remains intact. It will become the bulb of the new plant and will get bigger every growing season. Mine bloom in their third year. Some people may get better results than me. I sow the seeds in the containers I plan to keep them in for a couple of years and place them to have plenty of room. They come up, grass-like, in the first winter. I move them outdoors, still in their containers, to get full sun in spring. Down here, I don't keep them in full sun for the summer -- it gets too hot. but you perhaps can do so. Keep them watered; I put the containers in a shallow tray to lengthen the water. I have never tried planting them out in the ground after that first summer, but it's worth a try. I keep them in the basement with good light for the second winter and then put them in the ground and hope for blooms the third. This is just "how I do it" in NC zone 7a. I agree with The Virginian. I'm trying to replace some of my lawn with shrubs and flowers, so whenever I need a new area cleared, I lay down cardboard, then whatever organic material I can get my hands on. One of my neighbors gives me his grass clippings, so that usually goes on first. Last fall, I collected 30 bags of leaves one afternoon, and shredded that, then laid it down over the grass clippings. I've been having a ball all spring, watching various kinds of birds pick through it, looking for bugs. Besides eliminating the need to cut off the sod, by the time I plant an area, the top few inches is actual soil. (Under that, unfortunately, is pure, heavy, clay.) Shredded leaves, raked out evenly, look just as nice as mulch, IMHO.

Many people will suggest removing the plants that grew there this year taking nutrients from your soil. These, now dead, plants can be composted, extra work, or can be left in place and covered with the paper and leaves to put those nutrients back into the soil they grew in. The shredded leaf mulches I put down in the fall usually are digested by August and the soil really needs more mulch, and some years I have some to put down while others I don't. If I do have mulch material I will add it but if I don't I don't get overly concerned about it. Shredded leaves will be digested by the soil bacteria sooner then whole leaves would, depending on the tree species, which means the whole leaf mulch will last longer but will not feed the soil as soon and whole leaves are known to keep some plants from growing if they cover them. I add compost to the mulch and do not concern myself with "fertilizer" since the compost and leaf mulches keep the soil in my garden well supplied with necessary nutrients, as periodic soil tests have shown.

just me 6, If you have trouble finding enough nitrogen material to balance your hardwood sawdust, I have a suggestion that could make some of that hardwood sawdust much higher in nitrogen. It would entail peeing into 5 gallon buckets of the sawdust. There likely won't be any smell until all the sawdust in the bucket becomes saturated with urine. At which point you could spread the smelly sawdust as a layer on the lasagna bed and quickly cover it over with plain sawdust or leaves to keep the odor down. This method should probably only be used if the lasagna bed is going to be left to age for some time before planting. Undiluted urine is a very strong fertilizer source. Undiluted urine will burn plants if applied to heavily or if young transplant roots come into contact with too much of it. Some other things you can layer into your beds include, used coffee grounds, compost, aged or composted manure, grass clippings, hay, straw, shredded paper, food scraps appropriate for composting (watch stuff with seeds, could be annoying.) The originator of the lasagna gardening method says to use peat every other layer, this is not necessary and it may cost some and not be all that sustainably harvested but most people run into the same problem of running out of other materials before they are done building the beds.

I leave my leaves right where they fall. If they are in the way when I go to plant is spring I rake them out of the way a bit and then go back ignoring them.

Unfortunately my leaves don't fall in the garden, so we rake them and put the in big (5') garden fence rings off to the side of the lawn. Let them sit 2 season, and you have beautiful leaf mold for hanging pots, etc.

I love leaves.

Especially my neighbors leaves.

Mine get mulch mowed but the neighbors don't like theirs so I rake them for them and use them to winter mulch many of my shrubs ect. And to add to the compost bin.

I love leaves. :)
