Help!! Earwigs attack
Comments (20)Ahajmano- The earwigs at my place are OUT OF CONTROL. They have eaten every pepper, zucchini, watermelon, cantaloupe and cucumber plant I sowed. They even got the tomato seedlings. I am so depressed over it. But I like you I have mulched my whole gardening area with wood chips 5-7" thick to suppress weeds, retain water and eventually improve my rotten clay soil (Fertile but a pain in my bones and muscles). And I am not removing a 1/4 acre of mulch. I am just going to have to be smarter than an earwig! ;) In my experience the areas of where I have forked the soil over a few times with the wood chips and compost (Over a 2 year period) seem to be supplying them with enough food that they leave my veges alone. Crazy but that is the only difference within the beds. They are still there...they come running when I water. I read someplace that if provided the proper environment they will leave your vegetation alone. Who knows but I sure do dislike them right now. I was blessed by three of them in my shower this morning. Needless to say they are swimming with the fishes!...See MoreEarwig trap
Comments (26)Well earwiggs traps became ant traps,my compost bucket traps more flys than my fly traps, and the wiggs still laugh at my failure.I'm finding an effective bait for flys though.60%egg powder,25%yeast,15%bakeing powder or soda.add enough water to this to drown flys and once it ferments and then turns sour, your favorate fly trap becomes the hotell California. Check in,but never check back out.it also acts like birth control for flys as the eggs and larva can't survive.I read that top entry traps do best on flys, though I have a number of disigns in place to see which does best.but I'm still stumped on ear wiggs.little help guys....See MoreWinter sown corn vs direct sown corn
Comments (5)I have been trying various methods over the last few nights. Rolled up damp newspaper was my least favorite/effective method. White wine worked fairly well. Oil in a fishy smelling cat food can also worked well. But I tried the soy sauce/oil last night, and that was by far the most effective. I got about a dozen dead earwigs a night with the wine and oil/cat food. With the soy sauce method I probably had 200 dead earwigs overnight. A friend also told me 30-40 drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract mixed in a small spray bottle and sprayed on and around the plants keeps them away. Hopefully with these two methods, I can get rid of them!...See MoreCutworms/Slugs/Earwigs
Comments (6)It's the mild winter we had. The Dallas Arboretum's hosta gardens were decimated by cutworms. I had to spray for them and that's the first time I've ever had the problem. There are so many aphids in my trees that everything is sticky. There are flies everywhere; gnats are out of hand. You can barely stay outside because of the mosquitos. They found the West Nile Virus in mosquito populations here at least 6 weeks earlier than usual. It's just a bad bug year across most of the U.S. Hopefully we'll have some winter this year and next year will be better. bkay...See Morepaulns
