What's For Supper, Yet Again.....

Went into work today, even though I didn't really have to. Just to tutor a Ph.D candidate in psychology on how to use a statistical analysis program. ANOVA, and all that. Decided to go by the outdoor sport place. I bought a small, one person kayak. My canoe is just too big and heavy for me to cartop. Stopped on the way home and picked up several items for supper. The sea food shoppe had Alaskan king crab legs. I bought one. Those things are large.

Anyway, so supper this early evening consisted of one Alaskan King Crab leg; tilapia chunks prepared in a white wine, lemon, and butter sauce, served over spagetti; and french bread. It was washed down with some 8 year old apple wine that I have had aging for a while.

It was good, and I enjoyed it. Simple and easy to fix, simple and relatively easy to clean up.

So, after supper settles, I will take the new kayak down to Second Creek landing and get it wet while there is enough daylight left. Hopefully I will stay dry....

Life will be quiet and leisurely this holiday weekend.

-connietn, that is too bad. I have had peonies that have taken several years to develope enough to bloom, but they did have more than one flower! They are very pretty as cut flowers, but it seems the whole point is to see it in your garden! -prairiemoon, that is wonderfully sweet of you to offer! I don't think I will try another 'Chocolate' though. Lol, might as well try something else. I recently obtained seeds of Eupatorium atissimum 'Prairie Jewel', which also blooms in fall. I am curious to see if the bloom time is earlier or not. Have you gotten any frosts yet? Maybe we just get them early... -maifleur, kind of pointless to cover them. Since the first frost last week almost every plant in my garden has shriveled. Sometimes there is just nothing one can do about it. Lol, even the Asters are going bye-bye! CMK

I thank you all for your help. I guess I am just going to limp along with this piece of junk that I'm stuck with until I can get a new one. Raven, yes I did spend too much for it but 50 cents would have been far too much. Being not too bright, I'm not going to the site you recommended because I would have no way of doing the right thing unless I wait for my Granddaughters to come and walk me through it. But as long as I'm not going to keep this pile of trash I guess I don't need the information anyway. Thanks again for your help and who was it said, "there's a fool born every minute"? Well, guess I got that right anyway. lol

Do not pay. The worst they can do is take you to court, where you can explain your loss. DO take pictures. DO encourage the roofer to deal with the neighbor directly (as nice as your neighbor is, it shouldn't be your responsibility to handle the damage and you could end up getting stuck with a bigger loss even though the guy sounds like a sweetheart). DO tell them "I will not pay you until you have made things right." You should not be paying for imaginary materials, and should not be doing repairs to damage caused by the roofer (the electrical, the nails, and the neighbor's property). Make sure the pile of wood pic they will send was actually taken of your wood at your house!!

With regard to letting the beet seeds sit in water until they germinate, and then planting them, root damage is one of the last things I would worry about. When I plant 2 inches apart, and they come up anywhere from 2 to 6 inches apart (because of incomplete germination), I routinely restore 4 inch spacing by transplanting the seedlings, and even shaving multiple seedlings (as beets tend to produce) apart. Movin' them around. A small teaspoon does a nice job of that. They all go on to thrive. I find that tiny beet seedlings are pretty indestructable. As I think I said, I have soaked my beet seeds overnight, and it seems to make little difference in germination time. Wet seeds are harder to manipulate, however, and I don't enjoy planting them. You can't easily drop them in place. They stick to your fingers. So especially in that soaking doesn't seem to make a big difference, I'm inclined not to soak. I'm skeptical about beet seed scarification by shaking onto sandpaper. I've done this, and they come out looking pretty much the same, with little or no chaff left behind. I think they are too lightweight to scarify efficiently by bouncing them around. Heavier seeds scarify a lot better that way. As of now, as usual, I have thirty feet of beet seedlings, perfectly spaced. It just takes a LONG TIME to make that so.

Comfort food, not exotic. It's sixties today and cool and a stiff breeze is blowing. I've been out pulling down apples from the mid-limbs of a tree and managed to bonk myself a good one with three of them and a tree frog. rofl. Poor little thing landed on the ground, looked up at me and hopped away unharmed, but shaken.

Polish sausage links, potatoes au gratin, cabbage from the garden fried with onions and bacon, and hot, fresh applesauce. For the afters, peach cobbler I made to use up the peaches.

I'm a bit behind today. Thai Jasmine rice is in my rice cooker, left over chicken in the fridge sitting right next to some mushrooms. I bought some bottled Vindaloo Sauce (keep your fingers crossed) and once the rice is done into the sauce go the chicken and mushrooms ~ salad on the side.

I anm starving!

Oyster, Shitake, Baby Portobella, and Button mushroom ragout over broiled polenta with crumbled goat cheese on top, served with wilted spinach and cherry tomatoes. (Saw a recipe in Everyday Food and modified it.)

I'm chilling with a nice glass of wine at the moment...

In a minute I'm going to get up and reheat the last two slices of apple pie and serve it with some vanilla HÃ¤agen-Dazs. As a thank you for the tomatoes I've been bringing her (I'm still producing about a pound a day... when will the insanity end?) my non-gardening neighbor surprised us with a pie made with the apples from the tree in her yard. (Cool tree! Two trees grafted together so in the spring it blooms pink and white at the same time!)

Vegetarian tonight - Quorn cutlet (tastes like chicken - really!), baked potato- topping for both: yogurt with finely chopped onion, green pepper and capers; a tossed green salad on the side.

Last night was vegetarian--lots of cut up veggies, some cheese, sliced (local) tomatoes, and cheese focaccio bread.
I'd claim to be good, but I had a cheeseburger for lunch and couldn't face any more meat for the day. Still, my dinner is a fave whether I eat meat for lunch or not.

Had pot luck at the fern show judging day. Lots of good stuff, broccoli salad, baked beans, ham, turkey and lots more. Then 5 different deserts. Now I have to work harder and try to loose some of the extra. ; )

Good show this year with lots of vendors if you are near the LA Arboretum in Arcadia.

No taste of autumn here at all. The high was 92, so we had a fruit salad for dinner tonight.
