Stupid me, yet again.

Took my old computer in to be fixed. The guy said it was really not worth fixing, but he would if I insisted. I was tired of fighting with it. He had some used computers that he had gone over and fixed whatever was wrong with them. Well, I bought one and since the day I brought it home it will not download anything. Bought some cd's to make greeting cards and the other was a game cd. Also as far as I can tell I can't burn one cd from another. I can't figure out what else to do or is it going to be like this forever? I cannot tell you one thing about the computer because in my stupidity I didn't get any information about them except I think it is a Windows XP. Oh, Lord, how do I get myself in these messes, I don't know. But thanks for any help you can give me, if there even is any. BT

Do you mean install or download? Install would be loading an application from a disk onto the H/D while download would be taking something from the Internet. One requires the drive, and one does not.

If you did mean install and not download, I would first recommend that you download Belarc Advisor. This free application will give you a report of everything inside this "new" system. Armed with that information your concern can be promptly addressed. It may be something as simple as the drive is disconnected.

personally I think I would be back at that shop telling them they did not sell you a functioning computer, I hope you did not pay much.

It sounds like it does not have a cd burner drive on it only one of the very old type that only will play a cd.

go to belarc and run it on that pc it will give you a list of all of what is in the pc so you at least know what you have.

For cooking, I use EVOO or organic canola - these are the healthiest vegetable oils. There is no way I am going to use cups at a time (except for making salad dressing) - they are much too expensive. When pan-frying I just dump the leftover oil on the compost or even in the woods. Or sop it up with used napkins or paper towels, or even brown paper shopping bags, and put in the compost bucket. I don't see any problem with composting cooking oils on a reasonable scale - obviously you wouldn't put a gallon of oil in a small compost bin. It doesn't go down the drain - even small amounts are terrible for drains and septic - and it doesn't go into the waste stream either.

Stupid deer got my lillies again

I put lilies in container on deck just to have them once. Last night deer jumped fence into butterfly garden again. So far they've eaten Aster Divaricatus, Liatris, Salvia May Night, Echinacea Twilight and Lychnis Coronaria. Yes, they ate the Lychnis I have in another place too. So much for "resistent" and they don't like fuzzy foliage. I've just about had it this year. Deer, rabbits, groundhogs, zillions of slugs, chipmunks and insects/bugs. What hasn't gotten eaten or nipped off got pounded into the ground from thunderstorms. How do you all stay the course year after year? Guess if I see some blooms I'll be happier around July/August. The one other Lychnis I've got up in the mailbox bed in front of Penstemon Husker's Red is blooming and the flower color matches the Dianthus Zing Rose along opposite side border. I just answered my own question. I get so excited to see blooms I forget about things lost for a while. I saw my first Campanula Summer Blues bloom flower and it's truly like a beautiful blue/violet bell.

Cute! Unfortunately, the rain dance didn't work for me. All my WSown are in the ground except a few perennials that I had potted up, but I still have things I wanted to transplant from place to place. And those potted up things I'd like to get in ground now but it's just too hot and dry. I've given up until fall because so much is frying in the heat and drought. I guess I'll have to pot them up to bigger pots if I want them to survive. It does have to get better by fall, doesn't it? I sure wish you guys with all the rain and cool temps could send some to me. Squirrels Yet AGAIN!

I planted 2 packages of sunflower seeds one year. They came up & were nice little plants almost ready to plant. The squirrels dug every one of them up, bit them in half & left the empty shells that the plants grew out of laying on top. They didn't eat any of it, just bit the stems in two. After that year & for the next few years, they destroyed the seeds I tried to start including the ones in the garden. They also dug up anything else no matter what it was if it was a seedling. DH sat in the yard at all hours with a gun & finally got rid of them. They were red squirrels. Now I have a gray who takes one bite from each unripe pear on the tree & then throws it down & moves to the next one. I haven't had a pear from that tree for 3 years. He better not mess with my brugs or the gun will come back out. Linda

"as far as I can tell I can't burn one cd from another." If you're trying to burn a copy of a cd on a new cd the original may be copy protected and cannot be copied.

Some of the information this program detects should NOT be published/posted on any site, not only for your own security but also to stop the illegal use of your program keys being used by people using pirated copies of these programs.

If you wish to supply us with information from your Belarc report, we suggest you copy and paste only the pertinent information in your post.

Thank you Z. I took for granted the fact that a user would only post the hardware report.

On an older used system a software key concern should not be critical, but for a newer system or one with newer software it could be. As I am one who always recommends developing protocols and sticking to them your alert is very valid.

Since she made no statement to the obvious, and the system was used I also took for granted that it was purchased as is. If you are sharing my brain run, not walk, to the nearest emergency room.

Does this computer have a name and model number on the front? I realise some parts may have been changed internally but we need to start somewhere.

Does it have a manufacturers label on the back?
Most importantly does it have a Microsoft sticker on it anywhere with the 25 digit registration code? Do not publish the code her as others have already noted but we need to determine if you have a legit copy of Windows

I thank you all for your help. I guess I am just going to limp along with this piece of junk that I'm stuck with until I can get a new one. Raven, yes I did spend too much for it but 50 cents would have been far too much. Being not too bright, I'm not going to the site you recommended because I would have no way of doing the right thing unless I wait for my Granddaughters to come and walk me through it. But as long as I'm not going to keep this pile of trash I guess I don't need the information anyway. Thanks again for your help and who was it said, "there's a fool born every minute"? Well, guess I got that right anyway. lol
