What juicer to eat all our great vegetables?

We are all encouraged to eat 11 fruits and vegetables a day. This is hard to do one at a time. I'd like to juice several together. I know the taste can be good.

Since fruits and vegetables are really the most important thing we put into our body I don't have a problem with spending money for a good juicer.

Do any of you have any recommendations on a brand?

Am I way off, or isn't this a good idea for all of us, especially those of us interested in organic gardening?

Thank you, I just posted over there. I directly emailed one lady who talked about using a juicer I had read about online, the Breville, and she already wrote me back with rave reviews.

As one who has done a great deal of vegetable crop nutrition research for a land grant university, I disagree with digdirt's comments about N analysis. I you want accurate, useful results, first and foremost you must take the sample properly. Second it must be handled properly and third, the results must be interpreted properly. Not doing the first 2 can easily lead to useless readings. To me, by far the most meaningful N soil analysis is TKN or total kjeldahl nitrogen. It accounts for all nitrogen sources except nitrate-n which is a small component of the soil N present at any time in a soil profile. Given together, A soil analysis for TKN + Nitrate-N will give the total amount of nitrogen in the sample. I will not speak to the interpretation of results and subsequent recommendations except to say there are those based on sound science and there are those that are not. I agree with digdirt that there are way too many "blanket recommendations" issued and find it at least unfortunate if not environmentally irresponsible. Anyway that's my 2-cents worth.

I've killed my share over the years. I didn't like it or look forward to it, but it had to be done. No one here said anything about enjoying killing animals. They are rodents that carry diseases and eat my food. I kill them with the same mindset that I set a mousetrap with..I hope it's quick and the animal doesn't suffer, but it has to go. I grow my food because I prefer it to store bought. Gardening is not easy, and rodents make it that much harder. I've had a garden here for almost 30 years and this year is the worst I've ever seen for groundhogs. There seems to be a population explosion ...my neighbors and I have killed at least 10 between us this year, and we are very rural. In years past, maybe I had 1, some years none..but this has been a bad year.

$17? $20? Per square foot? Are you sure that's not the value of what you grow in that space? Or else someone is buying all their plants in the gallon size and planting them in pure purchased potting soil. The best reason to grow your own is to get better food, not necessarily to save money. But, darn, where do those figures come from? My son is starting from scratch this year and so far has $6,000 in plants, fencing, raised beds, and irrigation. But that is for 13,500 square foot of deer and varmit proof growing area. That's (what? math isn't my best skill) about 25 cents per square foot in fencing and permanent assets that should be prorated over the life of the garden and the life of the fruit trees. Veggies seeds aren't cheap, but there are less expensive ways to get them besides off the rack, and a package should be good for a couple of years. It's not the cost of veggies from the market. If you have home grown, you will eat more veggies than you would have bought, and you will eat veggies INSTEAD of other purchased groceries. Note: my policy is to only grow stuff that is expensive to buy, or else tastes much better home grown. I grow blueberries, not potatoes. Also tomatoes, because I don't like the pink rubber balls from the market.

Snails are usually kinda obvious especially if theyre doing massive damage. Check around, under, moist, dark, etc. to make sure but you usually see their shinny trails, right? Ive heard beer works but you have to put out multiple beer traps around your plants. Ive heard to use soaked dog food in piles to distract the snails. I can only think that youd end up with a lot of snails if you actually fed them regularly. Ive also heard over and over that putting crushed egg shells around plants works. I dont believe it. I met a fella on another forum that raises snails. He obliged me and put some snails in a tupperware with a barrack of crushed egg shells between them and their food source. The snails crawled all over the egg shells no problem. I like this: Garden snails are edible. Many of them are the actual species used as escargot. As far as I know none of the snails in Texas or even the United States are poisonous. They can become poisonous by eating poisonous plants, fungi or snail, snail bait, etc. You just feed them something like herbs for a couple days, starve them a few days and then cook. Ever since I learned this I havent had any snails in my garden... pity, I like escargot.

Hi Ginny,

Another option, which we bought, is called a vita mix machine. It is a very high powered blender, not a juicer. That way you can have the fiber too. You can google vita mix and find all kinds of recipes as well if you are interested in that approach. We really like ours.

Thanks for your idea Roger! I am new to all these fancy blenders and juicers. I've always used the $20 Osterizer blender for my daily shakes. I don't think that unit could handle a whole apple, kale from my garden, celery, carrot, etc....

I'll definitely look at the Vita Mix and see if it can do what I need.

Keeping the fiber is certainly a good thing, I just need to find a unit that will easily process several vegetables and fruits so I can have a quick drink.

For a juicer take a look at the Champion. I love mine and with the coarse screen extra I'll never give it up. Also it is built to last.

If you're looking for a kitchen appliance that will do almost anything and everything for you check-out the "Health Master."
