Water lilies- low water level in winter...

I have a mud bottom pond that I would like to establish water lilies in. It is nearly 20' deep in summer (very gradual slope from edge), but the water level drops 3-4 feet over winter as it is ground water fed.

That would kill waterlilies wouldn't it? I do plan to get some of the larger vigorous varieties- but even they- I gather require no deeper than about 3 feet of water?

Just looking at it now- while it is completely frozen and snow covered, all of the planting areas are now above the water level.

Any varieties that can be planted really deep? Thanks!

I don't have the answer for you but I hope someone does because I want to know the water level for lilies also. I had a Colorado at about 12 inches last year and it did fine but didn't put out very many flowers.

I hope we get some good responses.

Any ideas?
I could plant the root deep- below the frost line- if there is a safe depth for it to re-sprout in spring.
How deep is safe, so that it doesn't get smothered?

Whether you need to bring the fish in or not would depend on how cold it gets in your area. It looks like you have a half barrel and that might not provide enough protection if you get below freezing weather. As far as the lily goes, if it is a tropical lily it will need to come inside, but a hardy lily can stay outside. You will want to cut it down to the pot as the weather gets colder. Rotting plant material isn't good for the fish. If it was your first year, maybe the lily wasn't mature enough to bloom. Also if it doesn't get enough sun it might not bloom. The other plants should probably be removed. They look like the type that might die in cold weather. It is true, you do not want to let the barrel ice over. You want at least a small hole for gas exchange. But don't pound on the ice if it does form. That can damage the fish. Sit a pot of hot water on the ice (holding on to it) to let the heat melt the ice. I am not in Ohio so I can't give you precise information, but I would err on the side of caution with that small a pond.

weissman incorrect. The element is used for heating the water as well as drying. Water level should be up to just beyond the bottom lip of the over-fill sensor/float-valve...probably located bottom right in front. Check the level when machine has filled and has begun to operate. If the water level isn't up there, you've probably got a bad fill solenoid...which is not uncommon. Doesn't cost much and isn't hard to replace. The element doesn't require submersion in order to operate correctly. However the DW does require sufficient water level to operate correctly. I've got two whirlpool golds at two locations. One of them had this exact problem -- which the warranty-tech told me was somewhat common with my units. Replaced the component without even moving the machine. He was in-and-out in ten minutes.

@maxima9 It is most likely an air pressure switch. That is what the clear tube going into the back of the control panel senses. As the water in the drum fills it creates air pressure in the tube. The other end of the tube goes into the drum and is usually connected to the center agitator which has holes in it. As the water fills the drum the water will fill the clear tube and increase the air pressure. This pressure change is then read by the computer in the control panel. Once the correct pressure is reached for a small, medium or large load then water inlet valve is turned off. It is most likely all computer controlled and not defeatable. I suppose you could cut the tube and insert an tee. Then attach a tube to the bottom of the tee and route it outside your washer somewhere convenient. Then put a gas tight valve on the end of the tube. When you want more water in the drum open the valve to allow air to enter the clear tube and keep the pressure inside the tube low. Once the water level is close to your liking, close the valve and the pressure will then build inside the tube and eventually reach the proper pressure to turn off the water. That procedure above would all be premised on their being no timer on the water fill valve. Many computer controlled valves don't rely JUST on the pressure switch, but rather amount of time the valve has been open as well. This is to prevent a flood. The fill valve has a max GPM rating that can't really be exceeded by increasing pressure. The manufacturer knows what this rating is and programs the computer to close the fill valve before the tub would theoretically overflow. This is usually a safety in case the pressure switch fails. Even if you COULD increase the water level there is no guarantee that the motor is strong enough to properly agitate. If they designed it for 6-10 gallons of water and you can fit 25-30 in it that would mean the motor has to work with 240 instead of around 80lbs, plus the weight of the clothes. You see to be an eco washer also means they can cheap out on parts as well. Smaller motor, less cost, etc. I would not "trash" the washer. Just sell it used on any of the normal online places. Someone will take it. Then don't make the same mistake again.

It is normal for this machine not to see water at the bottom of the door during the (2) main wash, but when it fills up on (3) more water is added than on (2), you will see water at least 1/2 - 1 inch above the bottom of the door glass gasket. To answer your question, you should never see water halfway up the glass, there is only a small pool of water to get the job done. So your washer is doing what it should do, there is a learning curve to this machine and please use the least amount of HE detergent for suds will be found during rinse cycles......

I have a man made natural pond that is at the deepest about 6 feet deep (should be at least 10 feet but has years of build up on the bottom) my water level can also drop considerably, but during the summer when we do not get much rain. I have many water lilies in my pond some I added last year some the year before.

I would suggest that maybe you could either get a cheap water lily like the ones that you can get at walmart, lowes or home depot. By us these places usually sell water lilies for around $5. The year before last I bought a $5 walmart water lily and it is my favorite. Below I linked a thread from last year about them. Down toward the bottom somewhat you can read what I posted about these water lilies and I also posted a picture of mine. Anyhow if you get one of these you can always experiment without spending or wasting too much money.

Another suggestion would be you could always put a water lily in a pot and if the water level drops too far you could move it out deeper, just for the winter. But if you are too do this I would suggest you should get a nice pair of boots for wading in water. I think we have used ours more for the pond than for fishing.

I am not sure how deep mine are but I think I may have one that is around 3 or 4 feet deep. So you may be ok if you put one as shallow as possible, but deep enough so that it does not surface in the winter.

Is your water lily in the sun? If it is in shade that may be why it is not blooming for you, most water lilies need sun in order to bloom. In fact the flower on my walmart water lily will close as soon as it is in the shade. I don't think it should hurt it to be 12 inches deep. I have had one bloom when it was around that deep.

I do have one that has not bloomed for me yet. I bought it around the same time I got my first walmart lily. I got it from my local garden center. Last year it grew really well with lots of leaves but not one flower. It is right next to my walmart lily so it is not a sun problem. The only thing that I can think of is maybe it is too deep. The one that has not flowered yet is the one that is the deepest in the pond.

You need to get the walmart lilies when they first arrive at the store. Check out each one-some will probably be dead (mushy). Look for live leaves. I bought 3 last year to try-they all grew fine and bloomed.

As long as the plants are in water they will do just fine , even if they freeze solid . Just plant them and they will send out new shoots .
