Weeds in newly renovated lawns

Hi, just wondering what the newly renovated lawn people are doing about their lawn weed problems. I'm on week 9 with my KBG renovation and have millions of weeds out there. Is it safe to zap them with Weed B Gone now or should I wait until Spring?

I zapped mine with Weed B Gone, after the second mowing. Almost total success. There's a couple of persistent patches of clover, that appear to be dying slowly. Normally, I would spray them again, and I've decided not to. I'll deal with them in the spring. But my result, from the Weed B Gone spray, was outstanding.

Light application, keep moving that sprayer along, keep moving. You don't need to soak the heck out of anything, just keep moving along.

But my results are just fine.

Good to hear,I just dont want to ruin all the hard work and kill my new grass.

Being that the lawn is newly seeded, I wouldn't worry about the weeds just now. As you stated, the grass is too young to handle the foot traffic. Some of the weeds are probably annual and will die out this summer anyway. Right now, concentrate on getting the grass growing as thick as possible. That will eliminate some of the weed problem; the rest you can tackle later.

According to the label, after the 3rd mowing the grass should be able to take using Weed-b-Gone. It also says you can reseed after three weeks, so you should be OK. The only issue is the heat. The grass is stressed in the summer and the weed killer further stresses it. I'd suggest spot spraying - just apply it to the weeds you see. Capt Tom

A "weed" is a plant you do not want growing where you do not want it growing. For some people that White Dutch Clover in a lawn could be a "weed" while others will think of it as a boon because it can supply Nitrogen. Crab grass is an annual that produces a lot of seed that will germinate and grow when the soil temperatures reach to low to mid 60's. Aside from spraying poisons around control of crab grass can be achieved by mowing as high as possible and maintaining a good healthy stand of the wanted type of grass. I've always contracted for weed control and fertilizing because I assumed they had access to better chemicals and would know more about when to apply. That was probably true 20 years ago. Nowadays, both the information and the products are all over the internet. There's another forum geared towards lawn care "pros". If you take a little time to read the kind of questions they ask (e.g. "customer wants me to aerate, how is that done") or their motivation for doing things(e.g. "if you seed you won't be able to cut for 4 weeks and make money, just tell them seeding is not needed"), you quickly understand that a lot of them are regular people who woke up one day and decided to start a lawn care business, no passion, no knowledge, money being the main motivation. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you understand where they're coming from. No one will care more about your lawn than you.

Zap'em, especially if you have any perennial Broads like dandelion, plantain, ground ivy, clover, etc. Do not wait, get a jump on them.

A light to moderate application, coupled with the upcoming freezing temps may do the trick of keeping some of them from coming back next spring. Spray again next spring.

Yes,week 9 may be cutting it a little close. Most broadleaf herbicide labels say you can spray after the 3rd or 4th mowing.

Already mowed 3 times. Maybe I'll try a little inconspicious spot and take it from there. Anyone else spray yet?

I did just today, after 4 mowings, and am feeling good about it. Used a tank sprayer to spot treat rather than spraying the whole lawn, trying to calibrate the cure to the ill, fwiw.

Sprayed some weed b gone and it worked well (no harm) on the established turf. On the new sections it did some slight damage but nothing too major. I'll wait until Spring to zap again.

I zapped as well, after my fifth mowing (I renovated early). The lawn never even seemed to notice, but the weeds sure did.

I used Ortho's Weed-B-Gone plus Crabgrass killer on most of it, plus Certainty herbicide on the Poa trivialis I always get, and the nutsedge.

I was careful to spot-spray and not hit the lawn any more than I absolutely had to. At this point, I don't think I'd area spray under any circumstances (not that I ever do--I prefer to deal with things individually).

The end result is...well, here's the pic, which is worth considerably more than a thousand words.
