What Does This Date Mean?

I have purchased a few various orchids from Lowes over the past few months, and have noticed that the tags show the name of the plant, color, lighting information and a date. I love that the tags have so much information (so much better than having another NOID plant) but what does this date mean?

I like how the nursery butchered the name :-)
Just for kicks, I actually went to the RHS registry to check if a hybrid with that name has actually been registered.

The date could be related to anything.
It could be when it last bloomed or it could be the date when it was last repotted. I would tend to think that it would be a last repotted date as I've seen that on tags from orchids at Trader Joes.

The correct name is probably Phalaenopsis amabilis, a species orchid. The date is of no value and could be anything but is probably a repot date.

Cheyboygan's frost dates are 5-30 (last) and 9-25 (first). Traverse City's dates are 6-9 and 9-17. You are between them. Of the two, Traverse City's is the shortest season, so unless you have something that makes your area colder than that, those dates should be relatively safe for you. Just keep in mind that the frost dates listed for ANYWHERE are just averages, they aren't engraved in stone. Keep an eye on the weather report, and if a frost is expected, run out and cover your seedlings (except for cole crops, which should be okay). We recently had an invite to a party that read "the courtesy of a reply would be greatly appreciated" along with the phone number. It was for our niece's 21st, I didn't ring because we had told both my BIL and SIL on different occasions that we were coming. My husband told me a few days before the party that most of the family members invited had not replied at all. This was for a catered sit-down meal that had to have definite numbers ahead of time.

Hopefully I can view the article and determine the source data. I wish the first article didn't rely so heavily on home builders and marketers. They have an definite monetary interest in their provided data. I think what I need to search out is the raw, unbiased data of a marketer. But then I wonder if the marketer can be unbiased if they are trying to sell a marketing strategy? And, I wonder if it would be obtainable? It is a quandary. Thanks for some leads, Berniek. ohmygosh, How appropriate your responce is to this forum! It isn't that I am ashamed of my age, but there are so many young people that do not respect the wisdom of years and would discount what I have to say because I'm probably old enough to be their parent. Much of what I know is from experience and some from other people's experience. Some of what I know comes from reading about human behavier. Some of what I know comes from reading the Bible, and especially Proverbs. Some of what I know is just an application of common sense. I think that wisdom can come from thinking and/or contemplation.

Haha, yes, I had noticed the "Amaba Lis" and assumed it was amabilis. I have another from a BLC Hawaiian Leopard that is marked "MAHOGANY TEPALS W/ RED SPOTS". Also from Lowes. Wonder who their grower is.

Ah well, I was just curious to see if anyone knew exactly what that date meant. Thanks for the replies!

I believe you are correct coey. I am new to orchids, but words and language are an area of interest to me....

Oh, silly me! I had never seen the word before and just assumed it was supposed to be "petals". You learn something new every day!
