Renovation update with pics (35 days) Mag 3

Boy, have I got weeds! Mostly annual stuff except for the grass I pictured in another thread I just posted. I've seen quite a bit of improvement in the last few weeks, but I still have a ways to go. 90% of the spots that show no grass in the photos now have germination from seeding I did mid and late September.

My bad yard is more heavily shaded, I should've watered less. It's much more sparce than my front yard, but seeds are germinating. The front has very few thin spots, in fact the photo above shows the biggest.

I'm hoping for another good 2 weeks of growing (for establishment) for the seedlings!

IT's looking really really good, zhotster. I wouldn't worry too much about the weeds. If they come back next year, (they might very well not), you can deal with them at that time.

What's your fert schedule? Can you get one light dose of mild fert, like milorganite down, before fertilizing with the big one about November 1st?

philes21, thanks! The only weed I'm worried about is what I think is quackgrass, and I've got a lot of it.

As far as fertilization, I did a 1/2 shot of starter at the 28 day mark of my reno and plan another 1/2 shot in a few weeks. I have milorganite, but I think it's too late to be effective with the cold temps coming. I will then put the winterizer fert on in November for the year.

Hopefully, in the spring things will thicken up a bit!

oops It appears I misunderstood "your" post. I thought you had not caught that Moonbeam was a cross between those two, and I took your question literally. Sorry about that. Moonbeam is a Midnight type. In this instance, the progeny expressed characteristics most similar to Midnight, but that doesn't mean anything either to answer your original question. You'd expect the offspring to assume the general traits and characteristics of one or the other, but that doesn't always happen. It may turn out completely dissimilar of both. That happens but probably not very often. Something else that has happened is initially a hybrid is classified but then re-classified some time later. While it appeared one way at first, it changed over time of maybe 3-5 years. Again, it happens but hasn't happened often. Soooo, I think the ultimate answer is as I said before, there really is no way to answer. They just wait and see what happens. I probably shouldn't say that though, being that it seems a little too simplistic and doesn't account for intentional breeding, so please take that into consideration.

BillHill.....Thank you for the insight. I am definitely a lawn nut as you say, and I would definitely like to round everything up and start over, but here is what is keeping me from doing so: 1) I was about "this" close to a renovation last year, having cut the grass nearly to the ground, dethatched, and then reseeding. In hindsight, I should have just bit the bullet and rounded it up, too. 2) My wife and neighbors would think that I am crazier than they already do...For some reason, mentally, I have it in my head that no one will think me odd if I wait another year, lol. Just the other day a friend mentioned me to a person at the far end of the development and she said, "Is that the guy who is always working on his lawn?" 3) My lawn is not ideal, but it is not horrible. It greened up VERY early this year and is ok by most people's standards - just not my own standards. 4) Now that I have abandoned organics in my front lawn (I still fertilize organically, but use chemicals on the weeds), I am thinking that I should spend a full season combating the weeds so that there is less of a problem next fall. Right now, I fear that I will have major weed issues next spring if I were to renovate this fall. With all that said, there is a good chance that you will see me here in a few months looking for renovating advice!

two cycle nut....I am glad to hear that your renovation worked well and that weeds were crowded out by KBG. I probably haven't seen enough to really say for sure, but if I were betting, I would say that the average renovated lawn will not be able to crowd out weeds for quite some time and that some use of weed killer will go a long way to helping things move along. I walked over to my neighbor's new KBG lawn today (renovated in the fall), and I absolutely couldn't believe the difference in just 2 weeks. I declared war on the weeds, and it appears that the grass has spread into most of the areas where the weeds had died out. The only bare spots that he has are where some animals went to work and dug out large holes early in the spring. When I renovate next year, I am going to use weed killer in the same way that he did. I enjoy fertilizing organically, but my new policy is "hybrid" and I'll cheat whenever necessary.

Vkoltke01, I'm sorry, I lost this thread, thanks for the compliment! Definitely great to have someone in the same area with the same cultivars to compare notes with. I'll be looking forward to your updates! Those Norway Spruce, do they get tall? I had a "Norway" something-or-other conifer removed from the front yard of a previous house because it girdled. As it was over 80 feet tall and dangerously close to the house the removal cost me a thousand bucks. A thousand bucks for a hole in the ground, oh well.... I just mention because if your plant is the same as mine, they get big! My neighbor has one over a hundred feet tall and still growing, but unfortunately with a trunk that split pretty low (and also planted too close to the house), so there is a serious risk of one of the "trunks" snapping off in high wind and crushing her roof. I like those trees, but advised her to remove it and hope she does! I mean, mature trees are wonderful, but sudden death due to falling trees is probably a bit of a bummer.... Paul

Your front yard is looking really good. I am sure even backyard is going to look same very soon.

Looking great Zhoster! I wouldn't worry too much about the bare spots, they will fill quite a bit on their own, and I like Philes' idea of dormant seeding any bare spots that are left this winter.

When are you mowing? You won't believe how much that will improve the appearance. At least I couldn't. You will see much better then what you really have, and it is more than you think!

You're not alone there! Looks really good, definitely use the other half of the starter and save the Milorganite for next Spring. Paul is right on about the mowing!
