We're going to Florida right now!

and New Orleans. Or Mobile. Someplace on the coast. We were supposed to hang out until Tuesday morning and go to Kentucky, but to HECK with it. We NNNNEEEED the beach and we need it now. Bye! teehheee I'm so excited.

Have a great time, though you won't know I wished you that until you get back. Enjoy getting your feet wet in the ocean!

After around a foot of rain last Thursday and Friday, the weathercritter is predicting temperatures over 100 degrees for at least 4 daze this upcoming week. "It's not the heat, it's the humidity". Yeah. Right. Try 'em both at the same time. Gulf surf temps 85-86 presently.

LOL Cindy...I think it was 19 years ago...! I had to drive a sick cat to the vet in snow and boy was I scared. Well, that's good to know about corollas. I was just worried because David has to drive over a big bridge with the winds whipping around, so I thought my van being heavy would be better. Oh course David didn't say a word, just took the van so I would not worry. Bless his heart. I'll be looking out the window all day. Thank goodness my quilt frame is in front of windows because I plan on perking a pot of coffee and sewing all day. Deb

I've had two but not at the same time. The first was from Germany and worked out good. She was a real part of the family and we continue to keep in touch with her. She was here in 2001 at the same time as the terror attacks. I know that was a very scary time for her family in Germany. The other was from Brazil and was here in 2005. She was a nightmare and ended up going to live in another state. This was her goal all along. I found that most are from fairly wealthy homes which is why they can afford to come here in the first place. With the German girl, she told me that it cost her parents $18,000 alone for the program costs. She said that this covered her program in Germany (the one she pays to come here) and the program costs for the U.S. It also covered her airfare and her week long introduction course in New York. It did not cover her spending money. Her parents gave her $400 per month. We did not receive any money, but we knew we wouldn't. Also, we read thru many bios and picked the ones we thought would be a fit for our family. The info provided to us had written recommendations from their teachers, parents etc. We did have to do a little bio about our family but I will say that the one from Germany told me that if she would not have accepted us as her American family, then she would not have received another chance, in all likelihood. I wouldn't tell you not to do this because there are great experiences out there. I will say though that if something doesn't seem right, do not hesitate to get the kids out of your home. Also, when it didn't work out with the Brazilian girl, I demanded that they move her out of our school district. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Davidro1, the deposit for the counters is big, but at this point I don't care that much and I don't think we are being taken. Paying that much now allowed me to take advantage of a "we pay the sales tax" facebook coupon that was expiring. More importantly, there were only 3 local options for getting Richlite installed and of the others one never responded to my calls and emails, and the other quoted higher than this source (Eco Home Improvement in Berkeley, FYI). EHI was also pretty helpful and flexible during our planning stages, and gave us a really good deal on the flooring we wanted, so I am satisfied with them. I am just really glad it is moving forward...the last few decisions were the hardest of all to actually finalize. You don't even want to know how much time we spent debating whether to spend the extra for dovetailed drawers, for example...the upcharge was frankly unreasonable, but in the end we did it anyway because we knew that otherwise we would always wish we had done it. willtv, I will definitely post progress pics once we actually make any progress...for a couple of months, progress is going to mean "boxes pile up in my storage unit," so don't expect much anytime soon...the juicy stuff will begin in Mid-January.

The cost to refinish marble countertops will be based on size,condition of stone(how severe is the scracthing, etching and or staining,cracks,chips,etc)type of stone(darker stones and some limestones can be tricky to refinish)time and materials. Special pricing if we change the finish from polished to honed(easier and reasonably priced) or honed to polished(which is impossible to do to granite on site- very-difficult to do on marble(can be pricey). Our pricing on an average kitchen(60-80sqft) with normal wear and etching will start at around $650.00 and up. Larger kitchens with multiple islands and multiple countertops and other areas over 100 sq ft can that can be done in a day will start $900.00 and up. Pricing will vary region to region. Stone refinishing is one of those trades where experience is very important. I have been doing this since 2003 and still learn something everyday. While some stones are easier to work on others can be a serious undertaking. Not to mention the possibility of damaging fixtures back splashes,cabinets etc. Other issues could be dust or water containment and proper masking techniques so appliances,wallpaper,furniture and fabrics are protected . So While I am sure that a very handy person could do or try to refinish the stone there is the question of purchasing and using the proper equipment. Guess we decided to hang out in a place that has temperatures as hot s our own (it said 109 on the marquee a few minutes ago) and different sorts of bugs than we have, with the ocean.

Thanks Pidge, it was fantastic! It was LF's first time at the shore and he was fearless. I'd post the two pictures which show him running towards and away from the tide, but photobucket or gardenweb is preventing posting (changing my typed in URLs) :(

We had a blast. We drove down I-65 until it ran out. Seconds before it did, the conversation went something like, "We have to choose, left is Florida, right is New Orleans". "Uhh... Left then. We'll go to New Orleans tomorrow.". LF and I were stung by jellyfish(?) and lived. Jumping in the surf, splashing in the waves, sitting on the sand sipping brews, we all got what we came for. Since we stayed on Santa Rosa Island, we drove to the tip end of it in the morning. That afternoon, we were in New Orleans. LF was able to taste beignet and cafe au lait, the sites were amazing (as many previous times have been) and sad (destroyed roofs, windows, walls, FEMA trailers as far north as Hattiesburg, MS). They are rebuilding, they're alive and their spirit is soaring. Unfortunately, they're still not done and much repair is continuing. Our hotel was at 12% occupancy and we ened up with a corner room overlooking the Mississippi and downtown NO, normally worth $525. We paid $129 for it. While we dined on our french doughnuts, we were serenaded by Goldie. He sang The Way You Look Tonite with Lady in Red mixed in, his own rendition. I heard America singing and saw a phoenix rising. Fun vacation!

Glad to hear your vacation was fun.

Did you eat your beignets at Cafe du Mont?
I love that place.
It's a wonder people don't OD from all the powdered sugar in the air, on the floor, on the tables, on the service people, etc. at that place.
OOOHHHH, they are SSSOOO good!!

Robin, when you went I10 to NO through west Alabama, you were less than 1 mile from my house.
Wish we could have met and eaten lunch or something.
