Well, it has been 2 months and I'm almost there with the first bloom opening from this spike! Just FYI about the original post, the one on the right was a spike, the one on the left was a root. So I've only got one spike. The bloom on the opposite side of the spike from this pic has just cracked open slightly. I was hoping this one wouldn't have white blooms because the other orchid I have is white. From the color of the outside of these, is it obvious what color they are? Clearly it's a light cream color, so does that mean I have 2 white orchids now? Although there are some hints of color here and there. I was hoping for more color, but what can you do.

Yes, the spikes may continue to produce new blossoms for some period. Though they may continue to produce for long periods, it's recommended that after some period, maybe 3 months...cut the spike, enjoy the cut flowers, and let the plant rebuild it's energy to make a new spike(s) next year. Being as they naturally spike in the autumn, I'd probably cut now.

Emily, if you only have the one plant, get a desk light. I did that and bloomed a Oncidium Twinkle. Just take a regular desk light, stick a CFL in it and put the plant under it for the winter. I'll try to find the pics I have (been a few years), but you can rarely have too much light. You didn't mention light in your original post. Seeing you were in Texas, I assumed you had plenty of light. Now, I'm beginning to think that could be the reason for the lack of flowers. Try it, it worked for me. Jane

Its called a keiki, and it is indeed a new plant. It can be likened to the baby plants that sprout from spider plant stems. Eventually, probably early next spring, it will have sufficient enough roots you will be able to remove it from the mother plant and pot it on its own.
