where are the orchid deals?

Now that the orchid gods are smiling on me, and I have a check for $60 for a brassia I never really liked, and you've all told me in the other thread not to shop at orchidweb, and I've learned not to shop on Ebay, where can I find some deals?

Some days I'd spend it all on one fantastic orchid, but today I feel like a lot of little ones. Just a bit gun shy on where that would be, lol.

LOL I didn't say dont' shop at OL. I said don't use them as your price guide because most of their stuff is priced on the higher end of the spectrum. There are other places to look that will give you the true idea of how much you can expect a plant to cost. Orchids Limited has an incredible repuation, one of the best in the biz, have plants you won't find anywhere else, and you get what you pay for when you pay $40 for whats usually a $25 plant. The prices are high, but those who are willing to pay it are well rewarded.

The dealer is a local True Value that has been around for 30+ years. I used the 20055 for the first time today and it is awesome! I plan to mulch 90% of the time and that is where this machine excels. My neighbor just got a new Honda HRX... . I will let you know my opinions on the finished product of the 2 mowers if anyone is interested. He purchased his from HD so he still has to assemble the mower. I picked mine up gas and oiled up with personal instruction, I love the service from the local guy.

If any of you NJ Orchid Lovers are looking for some new additions to your collection, here is some valuable info! Yesterday I was at the Super Stop and Shop in Clifton, NJ and they had a bunch of phal orchids on clearance in their florist dept. (marked down from $16.99 to $3.99!) All had spikes. It appears that they were marked down merely because they were no longer in bloom. All of them had very healthy looking leaves and roots. I bought two myself, but am running out of room, so I had to leave the rest! I don't remember the names of the ones that they had, but i remember they had a dark pink/raspberry one with yellow undertones, yellow with red lip, and a few others to choose from. Enjoy!

Much too close. The ideal distance from a structure is more than half the expected mature width of whatever plant we are talking about, plus a couple of feet, to allow for variations in growth, and give some wiggle-room. On that basis, A. griseum would need 10-12', plus another 2 or so, to give complete clearance from the house siding. Having branches up against the siding is not good for the siding, for several reasons, ranging from mechanical damage from rubbing to mold and mildew from lack of air circulation. As well, tree roots extend beyond the drip line by about half the width of the tree, i.e.; the total width of the roots of a tree with a width of 20' will be around 35-50'. Granted, the last 3-6' will be feeder roots and smaller roots, but they will be there. If your house is on a slab, or if your water, sewage or septic lines run in that area (and unless they are less than 10 years old) you may have trouble with them as well. And if you have a problem with the lines and have to dig them up, it would do the tree no good either. Your comment about it taking time for the tree to get wide is certainly true, but it is almost impossible, and very expensive, to move a tree that close to a house, so what do you do with the tree, just as it is starting to show off the attributes for which you want it in the first place? I wouldn't want to cut it down then! If, as you say, then you won't own the house then, well, it's up to you, but I do feel it's a bad idea.

Maggie, I really can't pinpoint the location of this place. I just know it was on the North side of the highway and it sits out in a field. It is not a huge operation. We were just driving along and I saw the sign stuck up on a fence post saying Orchid Sale. It was a tiny sign, hand lettered, and looked very temporary. You pulled into a field and drove back to the greenhouse facility. There was a shed built on the end of the greenhouse and that is where we went in. There was no driveway, just ruts through the field. I wish I had paid more attention but it was really a chance encounter. The next time we go up that way I will try to get a better location. The people just wrote a receipt on a piece of paper; no business name. I think it is a mom & pop operation run by the little asian couple we met. They just invited us in, left us alone to wander until we were ready to pay for our purchases. I even got on Google Earth to try to locate it but no luck. I did realize that it is on Route 44 instead of 46. We take 46 from I95 over to 44 which then takes us into Leesburg. If you go to Leesburg you should check out the Simon's Seed and Garden Store on Magnolia Street. I got some good deals on Orchids and other plants there. I live in Lehigh Acres. Do you know of other people in our area on GW? We should try to get a group together to share knowledge and experiences if there are enough in our area. I have only been here about a year and we have been putting most of our energy into building walls, decks, walkways, and getting ready to plant. I am about to the planting point now. We went to ECHO Farm Day last week and picked up some good ideas and some citrus trees. I am really trying to get the info-structure completed before hot weather sets in. Bill

You should also consider CalOrchids and across the street, SBOE (Santa Barbara Orchid Estates). The latter has a nice species special once or twice a year.

And H&R is worth a look.

Join an Orchid Society. They have great auctions from top breeders and nurseries and you get lots of trades and free plants. I haven't paid for a plant in years.

Our orchid society spends $250 on a plant table every month. This is spend on quality plants often BELOW WHOLESALE from quality growers. Easily worth $500 to $600 at an orchid show. Usually $150 worth of raffle tickets are sold, you do the math. People are probably paying $0.25 on the dollar for the plants they lug home. That's a deal. Our silent auction also produces real nice deals.

I agree, joining a society is the cheapest way to acquire new quality plants. We even have a few groupies who seem to belong to all of the 6 odd societies in the greater Los Angeles area! I don't think its to score cheap plants, they have other reasons for going that. What ever!

I thank you all for the sites to visit. I'm slowly making my way through them. That $60 ain't gonna go far, lol.

Loving Oak Hill at the moment...my idea of a deal is that 10 plants for $30...anyone tried that? The fact that it's their pick scares me, will they consider my growing conditions or just pick what they've got a lot of?

Lori, those Oak Hill deals are for small seedlings that won't bloom for 2-5 years or even longer if your culture isn't to their liking. Unless you are not in a hurry and can wait, I would instead buy 3 or 4 blooming size plants -- they are marked with an asterisk *

Put together a short list and then ask for advice as to which would do best in your conditions. They are very nice people over at Oak Hill.

I've never had a problem with "their pick" when buying orchids on behalf of the Orchid Society where i am the treasurer and general dogs body.

Just a matter of telling the nursery in broad terms what you want. Example, just for here, would be no Miltoniopsis and no Hard Cane Dendrobiums because although we have 80 members not many have a glass-house. needed here for those types.

So perhaps, you could say something like. Beginner, living at x, growing indoors.
