How many plants do you need?

This is a sort of follow-up to a previous thread. I recently visited a serious hobbyist's greenhouse. He had ( at my estimate) about 5,000 plants but I only counted 30 or so in flower. I didn't think that was a good ratio. OK a lot were young plants ready to sell on, so let's say 1%. I'd like to have something in flower all the year round and at about 200 I just about have that, though there are still some lulls and I have too many plants for my liking that won't flower at all. I'm still learning and I think I'm probably underwatering as the flowering performance esp on my Dends is down on last year and I made a serious mistake with fungicide ( see previous post). What does the "panel" think is the minimum number of plants needed to ensure a year round display, given a reasonable variety of species?
