Lawn Renovation - Day 17 Pictures

Here's a few pictures of my KBG renovation at day 17. I rounded up the existing lawn and then scalped and slit seeded with KBG. I've been watering 3 times a day for 15 minutes each and I have some areas that are coming in nicely, but other areas look really thin. I'm wondering what you think from these pictures? The pictures aren't the best and I think there's actually more grass sprouting than you can really see, but there's still some large areas that are pretty bare.

It's coming along. As you probably know from reading the boards here, KBG can take up to 28 days + or - to germinate. I do think you will see a lot more green in the next week.

Tonight, I just seeded some poor spots on my now 19 day renovation. I used about 4 lbs of seed to hit spots that haven't come up. I felt I need to if I wanted to get any more fill before our hard freeze starts. I plan on watering in the middle of the night to keep the frost away when the temps drop to the low 30's at night. You may choose to do the some more seeding, I guess it all depends on your location.

Good luck, it's coming along nicely. The next 7 days will tell you a LOT! Patience is needed with KBG.

For 17 days, that looks good Mr. Andersen. Do not expect much of a lawn this fall. It may worry you a little in early spring, but by June 1 you should have a great lawn. You post dosnÂt say but I assume you used a starter fertilizer. If not, then get some down now. Bill Hill

I used my scotts classic reel mower as well this weekend and I must say how impressed I am with the cut of a reel mower. I hadn't used one since I was a kid and at that time I could care less about the quality of the cut itself. If I had A) more time or B) less yard I would seriously consider using one all the time. I may actually alternate every other cut or so between the reel and my other lawn mowers.

No worries. I have a ton of weeds to. I have some areas that are more weed than grass. When you aerate or slitseed it brings the deeper soil to the surface which contains dormant weed seeds. Because you have no grass the stuff starts to germinate. I think the winter will kill most of the stuff off. Like others have said put down 2 good pre-emergents and maybe touch of milorganite down in the spring. One for Crab Grass and the other for broadleaf weeds. The milorganite should provide some slow release nutrients for any stress. It appears Weeds are a natural and expected part of the rennovation process so no worries. Just keep watering that KBG :)

turf toes, Your front yard certainly looks better than mine did at the same time two years ago. I'm not sure I believe that 100% (lol), but thank you very much! Your lawn was actually what inspired me to renovate mine. All last winter my plan was to overseed this fall with seed purchased from a big box store. Then I came across those photos of your lawn on another forum (which also lead me to this forum), and I knew right then that was the lawn I wanted! I think it even listed the cultivators that you used. So thanks again! The above statement is 100% true! Hey, how about some updated photos of your project this year! Paul, You are quit welcome! I have gotten alot out of this forum for myself, so it feels good to be able to help someone along the way. You are going to have a sweet looking back yard next year, and you'll be a pro by next year should you decide to do the front! FWIW, I just went out and mowed again (mulched this time)at 2-1/4" , wow I'm not use to cutting that low! 3" was always what i've done in the past. There are actually a few area's that really still have not been mowed. All of them are where there was either a small flower bed or a burning bush, I wonder if I should throw some organics stuff down there? Even though I will be fertilizing with TB with iron on Sunday.

Yes it does look very nice from the street. And I can see where you would get picky about the quality. Before getting too deep into this, where do you live? With metric temperatures I'm assuming somewhere in the hottest parts of Canada or somewhere else in the world.

I think that looks good too!

Squinting I see some small sprouts even in the weakest areas, they are just coming in more slowly for whatever reason - different soil conditions, sunlight, temps, whatever. Just keep watering for awhile.

Looking good! Day 17 on KBG is usually "Oops, What Did I Do Wrong?" time. Mine hit on Day 14.

In two weeks you won't recognize it.

Thanks guys. There is definitely some small sprouts in the weaker ares so I'm hopefull that it will fill in. I guess I'm just suprised how unevenly it is coming in. I know there's some small areas where I didn't get the dead lawn cut short enough and I think it's smoothering the seedlings, but I will rake and reseed those areas in the next week or 2.

And yes, I put down Lesco starter fert right after seeding plus I added a lot of lime (40lb/1000) a few weeks earlier per a soil test I had done.
