Name That Plant!

Plant appeared on my lawn and I cannot identify it!

This plant appeared on my lawn today...I dug it up and put it in my garden bed but I have no idea what it is! I have never seen it before. If anyone can help I would apprechiate the help. The flowers look simmilar to an African daisy (but daisys aren't in bloom in my zone for another month!). It closes at night too. However, the leaves don't look like an African Daisy they look more like dicentra leaves or some sort of mallow.

I believe that's an Anemone blanda, I tried to grow those here but it was too warm for them, after the first bloom they never came back.

I grow them here in Ok. They bloom in early spring and then go dormant. Mine have been coming back for 20 years.

Oh please don't kill them. They are a lovely little wildflower, native in your State, Claytonia virginica, and you are lucky to have them on your property. As you say they are ephemeral ie they disappear of their own accord, so why persecute them? Here is a link that might be useful: Spring Beauty

Dear EG, Thank you very much for your inquiry. In that first picture, I think I see more than one type of grass. I believe I see a bermudagrass seedhead, but I also see leaves that are distinctive to Kentucky bluegrass and St. Augustinegrass. Pictures are sometimes confusing. From the picture, the grass with the long runner appears to be bermudagrass, as this is very characteristic of its growth habit. One thing to remember about bermudagrass, it has several varieities which vary greatly in leaf width. Pull the leaf away from the stem (not off), and where they were connected you should see a fringe of hairs. That is a identification key for bermudagrass. My students love that one! For the broadleaf weed control, use what I recommended, then fertilize. Again, thanks for the question and let me know if you have more. Any idea what this plant/weed is that has appeared all over my lawn?

There were so many, we dug them all out but I stuck one in a pot to see if it would grow so we could identify it. Apparently, it will not so this photo is of the dying plant! So, the stalk of the plant isn't red, but green with red fuzz. The stalks of the young leaves are red though. I had a look over the neighbours fence and don't see anything similar but there is a thriving climber so it might be hidden. Thank you for your help.

Thank-you Jeanne! We live in EXTREEM rural Nova Scotia with very few neighbours that are spaced 1km or more appart. Now that I think about it my neighbour (about 1km away, lol) has a large bed of them in her front garden...that's quite an achievement for a little seed!
