Comments (8)There isn't much you can do about the weeds now except preventing them from setting seed -- so I would keep them mowed low as soon as they start their flowering/seed production in late winter/early Spring (this is as soon as we break from the winter pattern and things warm just a little bit -- as early as late February depending on where you are, elevation, etc.). I would wait until late summer/early fall to try to build the lawn (aside from a pre-emergent for summer annual weeds in Spring). The folks over on the lawn forum know a tremendous amount about how to establish a lawn that will choke out weeds. But, I will say that condition number one is you can't grow dense cool-season turfgrass without at least 5-8 hours of sun per day (and the 5 is pushing it). Good luck!...See MoreWhat is this weed that has taken over my lawn and garden?
Comments (4)"Glechoma hederacea" is known variously as Creeping Charlie, Ground Ivy, Gill over the ground, Hedgemaids, Alehoof, and &*^%?! This member of the mint family grows in many soils but does best in moist, acidic, infertile soils, so the first step in control is a good soil test and then correcting any problems found. Generally any broad leaf plant poison containing 2,4,D will suppress this although repeat applications will be necessary since birds drop seeds this plant grows from everywhere. http://msue.anr.msu.edu/resources/ground-ivy-control-for-home-lawns...See MoreCan anyone identify what is all over my newly seeded KBG lawn
Comments (8)True, maybe not broadleaf. I jumped the gun, assuming the photo showed a plant larger than grass that had leaves ready to open. There's no scale to the image, like a quarter. A photo of the lawn might answer the question. It's hard to say what to do about it without seeing anything. If there are individual shoots here and there I'd leave them be and let the KBG grow undisturbed. If it is a carpet of weeds that might require some action. What state are you in? I assume it is northern since you seeded KBG. In most areas of the country this is the wrong time to seed a lawn. Unless you are in Canada or PNW it is likely that the new lawn will die out in July. If that happens then you will have an opportunity to prep the soil properly before reseeding. Is it a large area?...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
