Homesickness

I don't mean thinking about that post-vacation "Oh golly, it's good to be back" feeling, nor [in spite of what the kids may say while at camp] the pre-adaptation stage of being in a new place. I also don't mean the sorrowful displacement of 'you can never go back' when you discover your childhood home is buried until yards of concrete for a new highway.

I mean that out-of-the-blue whammy that hits you unexpectedly right when you're in the middle of a pleasurable journey.

It happened to me once. Stopping at a nice motel, enroute to visit friends after spending a week in Montreal, I opened the room door, took one step inside, and felt like I had been kicked in the stomach. I burst into tears: A real downpour, gullywasher, howler of a fit. Both the dogs and DH were dumbfounded, three bodies frozen in midstep, eyes wide and mouths hanging open. I remember looking at them and saying don't bother unpacking, we're going home. Eleven hours and 600 miles later, we were home.

Has anyone else ever been hit with the homesickness whammy?
