Thanks all for helpful answers. I watched a couple of Dramm videos which were very instructive. Discovered that problem was not hose nozzle but, rather, me. I have been so indoctrinated to water the soil and not the leaves, etc of plant that I was blasting a full shoot of water onto the soil in the containers. What else could the soil do but leap out all over the place? The Dramm demo's showed a softer shower that also hits the vegetation above. What a difference! Now I just have to figure out how not to flood the balcony - and grateful that the occupant below is never there. Thanks again, Terry

I'm not sure what Gilmour intended them to be used for. I purchased mine to fertigate faster than I could with a watering can. They *are* faster than a watering can. They will certainly work if you want to foliar feed though you might want something that will give you more of a mist. These don't give a super-fine mist. I found that there are limited options for fertigation: 1) Hose-end sprayers. These are accurate but in order to get the accuracy they significantly reduce the flow with a restricted venturi tube or similar. This allows them to work accurately for most people. These take ~5x longer to water, they cost ~$10-$20. 2) Source siphon systems - these include things like Hozon (~$15-$30) and Mazzei(venturi tube) injectors (around $100 by the time you get a bypass system installed). The Hozon and etc are all at set rates of like 16:1 or sometimes 20:1. Those ratios are too small for my liking. I'd have to refill a 5 gallon bucket with solution too often during the summer. The Mazzei injectors might work better. I didn't try one yet. I don't see how they could give full flow and inject at the correct rate. If someone has experience with them please let me know! 3) "Proportional mixing" systems like the EZ-Flo fertilizer injector. These do not work. They do not mix at the advertised rates. ~$65 wasted. You can waste another $25 trying to get it to work. It still won't work. 4) Dosmatic/Dosatron/Mixrite style pump injectors. These will work as advertised. I bought a Dosmatic 1% yesterday. It's still on the way. The unit itself was ~$260 shipped. It will also require a bypass setup which is another ~$20 if you build it yourself. They also have wear parts that will need to be replace yearly (for ~$10). They will operate at full flow and have adjustable injection rates. They go as high as $500 for some units with more options and higher flow/pressure rates. I've basically tried all of these except the Mazzei style injectors and I'm landing on a dosmatic style system. By the time you try every other kind and find it lacking you've spent 3/4 the price of a dosmatic anyway. With a 500:1 injection rate (~1.5 tsp / gallon) I can water 2500 gallons from a 5 gallon bucket of concentrated solution. This is at full flow with perfect injection rates. It costs more and it makes a little pumping noise when you operate it but it will be worth it to me. Ask yourself this: how much is your time worth to you? If you use a hose-end sprayer you will spend 5x the time watering. If it takes you an hour a day to water instead of 20 minutes that's 243 hours a year. Even if you only have to water once a day for half the year that's 121 hours saved. 3 whole work weeks. This now sounds like a hard sell for a dosmatic but, shrug, I've tried everything else and got fed up. I'll make a video of my installation and show you the Ez-Flo that I had in there before.

My favorite is the plastic one they sell at Walmart. It is all plastic/rubber and runs around $2-$3. It has about 6-8 settings on a dial, is inexpensive as can be, is much lighter to hold for long periods, doesn't "clunk" if you drop it on concrete, and doesn't hurt your foot if you drop it there by accident. Much better than all the heavy metal ones on the market. I actually prefer it to all of the more expensive ones I have tried. I keep one or two backups on hand, I like them so much. I shake it out really, really good before putting it away. All of the nozzles, no matter how much you spend, have a spring mechanism inside that eventually rusts out. If you shake all the water out of the nozzle after each use and hang it up to dry, they do last longer.

Newfie, thank you for that DRAMM recommendation. I saw one at a nursery this past weekend and bought it. It is working great!! I really missed the shower function. [g] I have retired the brass nozzle to the drawer as a backup. I also changed the w*ashers in the hose today and things are looking up. Thanks again! Spedigrees, I have an update. We watched that video about fixing the spigot and tried working on it. We had both spigots, front and back leaking and the valve inside the basement that turns off the water to the spigot was dripping too. [g] DH took part of the front spigot to the Hardware store and they gave him new w*ashers that fit it. And a new w*asher for the valve in the basement. Both of those are fixed and have stopped leaking. The back spigot which is the worst, he didn't get off because the screw is stripped. So that is still dripping but barely. When we have a little more time, we are going to get that off and replace it. We found another video showing how to do that. Now that the spigots are getting better and I have a new nozzle. I went out to water this morning, happy as a clam, I started to wash out the birdbath and I heard a rush of water behind me and looked over at the hose reel....would you believe it was gushing water?! I shut off the water and unraveled the entire hose. There are two on the reel and it looked like the second hose was no longer connected to the first hose. Because it broke off! I had to take the hoses off the reel and fool around with the hose and the quick connects and the washers and ended up having to ditch the first hose and connect the hose to the spigot to use it today. Another water related job for next weekend! Brother! Is there such a thing as a water curse? lol.
