The exchange forum used to be a busy place where numerous people exchange numerous orchids virtually every week. There simply is no cheaper and funner way to acquire orchids than to trade for them. If you have a few divisions you can live without, put them in the mail and for the price of your postage you will receive brand new plants you don't have.

I had given up on it but Allymarie stimulated my interest and I would like to see an attempt made to get that thing back to life. I have posted a few and at this point will accept virtually anything in return just to get the ball rolling.

Woohoo, Nick! How are you for Nun's orchid? I'm guessing you are good, with your collection. I doubt I have any orchid that you don't. Are there any other plants for which you are looking?

Will any of those orchids that you posted over on the Exchange work in hot and humid Jacksonville, Florida? I know some orchids, for example, cymbidium, will not work here due to our humidity. I'm not crazy about yellows but Encyclia cochleata, Blc Sea Urchin and Stanhopea grandiflorum are beautiful!

balkong, i'll tell you what i tried to keep on the balcony in winter. japanese yew - smallish, about 12" pot. overwintered twice/bloomed, then died 3rd year. hinoki false cypress - overwintered once. reg english ivy - died sev years when it was dropping into low teens; survived well last winter. this winter should be ok too - so hardy to 17F, sort of? it's in the biggest 18" pot. hydrangeas - overwintered once, but then bloomed very weakly. so not much point. montauk daisy overwinters well in 12" pot, burried in soil in 16" pot . so for me it's good. it even blooms 2nd year farely well. but then i chuck it, since it's weak. overwintered oriental lilies: stargazers once: wrapped the pot in big bubble and then covered with cardboard box overturned and lined in plastic. but easier to just dig in new ones in spring. oh, mums of course survive - but with NE sun won't really bloom. may be with your west sun corner they will fare better. that's about it for me. i had clematis on a diff balcony facing east/south-east. it did not survive winter though. also juniper survives, but it needs sun. may be SW corner will do. Hello, southerncrossag. I have not had to move any camellia myself under the extreme Australian conditions that you described so this is what I would do if I were in your place. If the bark is still green, I would assume that the plant is still alive, albeit suffering from transplant shock BIG time. The plant probably does not have the same root system that it used to have so I hope that the plant is now putting all its energies rebuilding it. However, it bothers me that it dropped all the leaves. I hope it has not decided to shut down completely. I would purchase a local chemical product for transplant shock (they are sold in liquid form at most local nurseries) and mix it with the seaweed solution per label directions/schedule. I would also stop any plans that you might have to fertilize with anything stronger than seaweed; you can restart that again when the plant has grown some leaves in Spring. Since Fall is approaching, stop feeding seaweed at your usual time so the plant can go into dormant mode when it sees fit. Super-important: Make sure the plant gets morning sun. Maintain constant soil moisture levels; do not let the soil go dry then get wet and go dry again. Those dry/wet cycles are not good for the plant. Since the plant has fewer roots, also consider supplying less qty of water than usual. The best way to address watering issues in these complicated conditions is to check the soil moisture manually and to water only when need (do not use an automatic sprinkler system if you can help it). Every 2-3 days, insert a finger to a depth of about 5-7cms and take appropriate action depending on whether it feels dry, moist or wet. Continue doing this thru Fall and Winter. Lengthen the number of days when you see visual signs of recovery. Go back to "your" normal levels/frequency when the plant has leafed out. Australian Fall/Winter are going to throw a curve on all of this as the plant may go dormant in preparation for winter. It will need less water and nutrients but, as long as you see some green in the stems, consider it to be alive. If curious, check one or two more times max before the start of winter. I wish I could give you a time table of when/if it will recover or re-grow leaves but I cannot. My gardenias once died to the ground and suffered for almost four months before I saw leaves grow back. Be patient and monitor it frequently. I would give it until the middle of your next Spring. Good luck, Luis

When I pick up things like this and try to revive them I generally do this: cut it back, plant in ground, keep well watered, use a liquid root stimulator with some of the waterings, do NOT fertilize - let it recover, mulch heavily but not right up to the stem. Good luck. Laurie in Mississippi

I really think the consumers would pick the organic/green choice. That has been tested ... consumers, for the most part are price sensitive more than anything. The amount of shelf space dedicated to the "organic" produce in my local grocery store has declined dramatically ... a national management decision to push organic led to 75% of the fresh produce being "organic" and 2x more expensive than the conventional. It immediately slowed sales down (this is a low income town), which meant that the organic produce turned over slowly and was going bad on the shelf, while they couldn't keep the conventional (grown closer) stuff in stock. I pointed out to the produce manager that although I could afford to buy the organic stuff, after lengthy shipping and sitting on the shelf it was flabby and slimy and I was buying conventional elsewhere. Since then, they have reversed the proportions. There is about a 25% organic for the ones who insist and 75% unspecified for the rest of us. As far as garden plants, Bonnie's stuff has the advantage of being grown for the locals. We get a bazillion kinds of chiles favored locally, and short-season or heat tolerant tomatoes.

I tried to do something last summer and was about to try again. My idea was to have a group offer up a few plants each into a pool. Then everyone in the group would pick from the pool one at a time until they were all gone NFL draft style. Since Nick posted 4, I will post 4.

Carol, all of the 4 I posted are OK for the heat and humidity of Florida. I'm open for 'Nun's orchid and many others. There are so many that no collection is beyond enhancement.

lumpy_i, I would be interested in the Ansella and the Cattleya.

Emily you can't divide Phaelies. If they choose to make a keiki you'll have a second pant but you can't force that to happen.

Are you interested in any plants besides orchids? I don't have orchids as I am new to them but have lots of broms and a million other plants as well as terrestrial orchid - Nun's orchid. I would love to have a pup of your Achemea Del Mar. Do you have a Wish List of plants?

Allymarie, would LOVE to do a trade - yes I do have both cane and dragonwing begonias - but just a quick note to let you know I've run into some snags - hot water heater is leaking in the garage and several other things popped up that are going to keep me from gardening. I'll get back to you when things calm down.

I have a bare root C. Skinneri var. Colrulea for trade. There are 2 new growths started. It could be divided once more for 2 plants.

Yes I have several divisions let me look. Also have a Dendrobium speciosum v hillii 'Don Browm' CBM/AOS which is about 10 years old and bloomed for the first time this spring. That would be a valuable trade if you like that sort of thing. I have 2 of them.

I would have to make a division. It would not be big enough to equal your skinneri. A 2 for 1 would work. Divisions already made are Max tenefiolia, Stanhopea grandiflorum. Also have a fairly large Onc altissima which is a duplicate for me. Here is a picture of the altissima.

I'll take your 10 yr. old Den with great excitement but I'll need to raise my side of the trade. speciosum has been on my short list. I'll be lucky to have it. What are the culture requirements for speciosum? Will it tolerate south Fl. weather?I want it but I don't have the heart to bring it to a hostile climate. I hope it likes it here. I'm going to see what I can find to add to the trade...Thanks Nick...

It likes a cold winter. Otherwise extremely hardy and tolerant of a variety of conditions. My daughter in San Diego enjoyed it's bloom and still has it right now. Unless for some reason she comes up here, I won't see her until June 7th. If you can wait until then, it will be in the mail June 8th.

That date is good. We always get 40 something and every few years we get 30 something. And occasionally lower. What temps does it like in the winter. I keep a mini greenhouse at 50 when needed.

C. louise Georgiana 'perfection' Pure white. Blooms in summer. It is completely growing out of the pot. When the bloom is over there will be divisions for trade.

Brassia pettiforme, this plant came from Ecuador. This was a volunteer division. Just kinda fell off. There is a spike and new root growth.

Those above is what I can find for trade. Nick, pick another for that den. The skinnerii is not enough....

I'd like to get all of them except the walissii. I have a large one. All of the plants I mentioned are on the table including this Encyclia cochleata division I found.

Summing up:

There are others Let me know what talks to you. Many, not all, of the plants I post pictures of on the Gallery forum can yield a division.

Allymarie, I want to get back to you. If it would be ok with you, I would like to wait until the fall for two reasons. First, that new hot water heater drained my gardening budget. :( Second, we are really moving into a bad time of year to ship tender plants in Florida. I think a bromeliad would make it just fine but begonias, on the other hand, I would worry about. Even with 2-Day Priority Mail, I am hesitant to ship rooted plants or cuttings. I'm afraid they will arrive "a hot mess". Can I contact you in September or October? Don't save anything for me... we'll just see if I have anything that would interest you then.
