Core aerating after Pre M put out
Comments (9)From Purdue Turf: In theory, a barrier of preemergene herbicide is created in the soil and limites emergence of crabgrass. Any gap in this barrier could allow crabgrass to germinate. This is why a uniform application of preemergence herbicide is required and practices like power raking or aerification are usually not recommended after application. However, research consistently shows that aerification does not reduce effectiveness of the herbicide. When aerification plugs are returned to soil, the herbicide may be simply redistributed in soil and not actually removed. The size of an aerification hole is only 0.5 to 0.75 inche in diameter and even though a crabgrass plant may germinate in a hole, its roots will explore well outside that hole and come into contact with the herbicide. Our recommendation is to not tempt fate and limit aerification following preemergence herbicide application if possible. But if turf areas will benefit long-term from aerification, aerify whenever you can regardless if a preemergence herbicide has been applied. Comments (15)I've never been to Lancaster, but I was in Philly for a while and learned how to pronounce it (after I said it with 3 syllables and all short a sounds, which resulted in much laughter among the natives). You don't need to really soak the seed. Soaking gets water deeper into the soil, but the seeds only need water at the surface. So your best bet is to water for a little bit several times a day (maybe 5-10 minutes 3x a day). Did you mow short before seeding? If not, you're probably going to need to let the existing grass get pretty tall. You don't want to mow until the new grass has sprouted and had a chance to set roots deep enough to withstand the vacuum created by a rotary mower....See MoreHow to get rid of leaves after aeration / overseeding?
Comments (11)I've had some leaves fall on my recently overseeded lawn. I've been watering several times a day. I've actually seen the young grass seedlings punching holes through the leaves (red oak and gum). I'm not expert or anything; I, too, come here for advice. Maybe don't worry about it for a few days? When I overseeded my KY-31 dog area with some Titan RX TTTF, the folks T Titan recommended on the packaging to cover the newly seeded grass with towels and/or clear plastic. The idea is to water first then cover everything up to trap the moisture. Once the seeds start to germinate, you are supposed to remove the covering (or else they will die). If you waited a few days before removing the leaves (maybe with a leaf blower but on a very low setting...?), I wonder if the effect would be the same... Maybe wait to see if any of the seedlings punch through the leaves? At last wait until you start seeing some that weren't covered up start to germinate. By then, your established grass would probably be responding to whatever starter fertilizer you put down. They might start lifting the leaves up a little bit for you. i would just be cautious with getting your mower out there right now to handle just a few leaves. Especially since you know more of them will fall anyway. My strategy - if using the mower - would be to get out there as few times as I needed during the germination phase....See Moresoccer_dad
