how late for sod?

I've already killed off the existing lawn and I've run into some timing issues with my calendar. How late can I go in the season to install sod? I'm in Cincinnati which is zone 5/6. Thanks for any help.

hello & i hope this gives you a better feeling for your sod - i am in akron ohio & 3 years ago i had all new sod layed in the 3rd week of october - the company i used told me that they normally do not go beyond oct 31 due to frost issues & that the sod was garunteed for 1 year - i watered like hell & managed to get 1 mow in before november hit that year - i also layed down a nice winterizer as late as i could just to give it a jolt in the spring - i never had any problems 7 to this day it is doing very well despite the dry weather we have had in ohio even in september - i wish you the best & i would also ask that you take the info from some of the experts on this board too - some of them really know what they are doing -

As long as the ground is not snow covered, frozen or muddy you can lay sod any time.

They will slowly root in. They put in bermuda during November when they were building the house and they did root into the ground somewhat when I pulled them up to plant trees and others a couple months later. It will just look ugly till April when they start to fill in.

Thanks, guys. But let me clarify...the grass grew great but I didn't have a mower at the time...I tried cutting with a weed whacker but all the clippings killed the grass. I've reseeded most but there was 1 spot (about 20 square feet maybe) that I couldn't get to...that's the spot I wanted to sod.

Warm weather grasses are usually not available from the sod farms out of peak season. If you're buying a ton of it you may be able to convince them to cut it for you, but generally only commercial clients get access to warm weather sod out of season. At least here in Houston that seems to be the case. It's been so wet this year I had to wait 3 weeks for my celebration sod & that was in season, just too wet for the farm to cut.

Too late in the season to seed and expect any reasonable amount of germination. But you can sod right up until the ground freezes.....if you can find the sod (some sod farms stop selling this late) Just make sure you have the soil properly prepared first. Sod requires the same seedbed prep as seeding a new lawn would and since it is significantly more expensive than seeding, you want it to have the best possible chance. The alternative might be to seed with a cold weather cover crop to satisfy COO requirements and then seed your new turf grass lawn in spring.
