How to lasagna already-planted beds?

Hi all,

Just read Pat Lanza's Lasagna book and would really like to try it. Problem is, the only 2 sunny spots in our yard are already gardened. One is a 6x12 perennial flower garden and the other is a 10x15 veg garden, both started this summer by 2 very newbie gardeners (us). So far all we've used for amendment is leaves and compost.

Can we do the lasagna method on already established beds and if so:

- do we still do the newspaper? (seems it's mostly to suppress the grass but also to keep in moisture)

- do we work around the plants or cover them up?

I was going to use mostly coffee grounds from the local bagel shop and leaves from our 10 big trees. Plus we have a compost pile.

Suggestions for how to go about this and also when? We're in KC. Thanks!
