Phal orchid and bloom spike

Hi guys, so i purchased 2 Phal orchids last fall, they are a regular store bought variety, one mini and one regular. They have not stopped blooming the entire time off their original bloom spikes! They just keep sending out branches and extensions and more and more buds keep appearing. By now, obviously, the bloom spikes are very long, branching and disjointed from where it keeps shooting out more flowers.

Should I eventually cut it back? Does it need a rest of some type? If I cut it off, do you think it'll make another or just rest for a few months? I love the flowers, I just wasn't expecting it to bloom for 7+ months straight. Please advise. If it's ok, I'll just let it do it's thing.

Honestly, I probably don't water them often enough, the leaves occasionally look sort of shriveled--I fertilize maybe once a month with Jack's bloom booster. Any special care?

Nice to hear a success story, sooner or later, you have to do maintenance on those "everblooming phals" read the stuff in the "cut or not cut" thread down the page.

Do not make drastic changes to your care routine, just increase your watering frequency a bit.

One of the best growers in our local orchid society uses a low nitrogen fertilizer (bloom booster is bulldust) on a very large mixed orchid collection as his base fertilizer.

Hi, alexandra. Since you want so much to give good care to those phals, you should invest a few minutes of time into reading about them. Good notes on culture for phals are available at the Canadian Orchid Congress (see url below). Just scroll down for phals. Good culture notes are also available at Big Leaf Orchids, where Peter Lin has written up culture notes especially for hobby growers. At Big Leaf, click "information" in the banner. A few minutes invested in reading up will repay you handsomely in better health for your Grandma's orchids while they're in your care. How many spikes can a phal orchid have at one time?

I never had any of the common hybrids make more than 2 spikes at a time. If you leave the old spikes, that's different. My impression from the OP was, how many spikes would form at one time? I'm not counting old spikes. I don't think the OP was asking about species. Jane

Unfortunately, your phal is not likely to pull through. Sometimes when plants are in deep distress they throw out a flower or two as a last attempt to propagate before death. The plant uses whatever energy it has left to to this. This is likely the case for yours. Plants die on all growers and we just get another one or three. And try again. Good luck
