From the picture and your description and location, you have a Santa Rosa. After the fruit is gone, I would prune it to a manageable shape and remove all of the under growth and debris around the tree. I'd also do a mulched 6ft. wide ring around the tree and keep it weed free. The tree will pretty much take care of itself. Once you've done this, post again this winter and we'll tell you how to get quality fruit from this tree.

I took a look at some pictures of various Senna genus plants on Plantfiles and none of them look the same to me as the photos above. I'm still looking for something that has the brown, bark-y stalk, with the little nodules on the surface...

I don't have poke that grows at my place but I do have lots of Bittersweet Nightshade (Solanum dulcamara). I remove it from gardens, but I didn't go nuts (as many do) when my kids were tiny trying to nuke it and "protect them" from it. It provided a good teaching tool for berries that look edible but are not. I made sure they knew exactly what it looked like - just seeing it helped reinforce plant safety lessons. Poke can also provide that same learning and teaching experience. FataMorgana

Thanks! Somebody on the Name That Plant forum suggested citronella for the first photo too, but the leaves don't have that sort of fragrance. More of a cucumber-like odor actually. I think the ruellia suggestion for the second photo may be correct, however. Though I will have to wait and see what kind of flowers the plant produces before I can say for sure!
