A poster, reported to be a replica of the original poster used to recruit pony express riders.

WANTED

Young, skinny, wiry fellows, not over 18. Must be expert riders willing to risk death daily. Orphans Preferred. Wages: $25 dollars a week.

Most people don't realize that the pony express enterprise only lasted a little over 18 months, telegraph went through. Another fact most people didn't know, the youngest rider was 11. His name, Charlie Miller. Bufalo Bill was only 14, they wanted little guys, jockey type.

We are located on the old Oregon trail, California Trail, Mormon Trail and the Pony Express Trail.

It appears the California trail carried the most traffic with the Oregon trail next.

There was one particular item the people going west on the Oregon trail begin abandoning along the trail at about this point. It was heavy, cherished and non-essential. Can you guess what it was?
