First-time powdery mildew victim--help

champagne

I just bought three bee-balm plants to attract more bees and put them in a giant pot. After only a week, powdery mildew has appeared on all the bottom leaves, apparently working its way up.

The nursery said I could bring them back but that it happens to virtually all bee balm plants. I've never had powdery mildew in my garden before and in fact have few, if any, diseases or pests, so I'm a bit spoiled there.

My question: Is bee balm worth having around if I suddenly have to start dealing with mildew and fungicides? Will it spread to my vegetables? (I have no roses). Or will it be wonderful for hummingbirds and bees and therefore worth the extra effort? I'm new to gardening with flowers but now I'm getting nervous. My marigolds and petunias are trouble free! And I do like a relatively low-maintenance life. And I hate the idea of using a fungicide, even an organic one.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.
