I have zero experience with AWP's and near zero knowledge about them. I found multiple sources, but many have poor ratings and should probably be avoided. The only source I found with good or great ratings was Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds www.rareseeds.com. They have a very good ("Top Five") G.WD. rating. BTW, the botanical name for Australian Winter Pea is Pisum sativum v. arvense or Pisum arvense.

I created a new garden plot 12' x 25' in area this spring. My native soil is clay loam. I wanted a deep root zone so I purchased a soil mix and covered the native soil about 4" deep with that. I immediately planted the entire thing with buckwheat. Once it began to flower I fenced it and let my chickens mow it down. After that I sowed a mixture of oats, tillage radish, and crimson clover in the fall. In the spring I'll let the chickens tear that up again and then sow some corn, squash, and cucumbers. There is some evidence that seed mixtures improve soil health better than monoculture plantings because they have higher net primary productivity as a result of greater light interception. Differing root architectures between the plants will also improve nutrient scavenging and mining. Grasses (e.g. rye and oats) are great for nitrogen scavenging, buckwheat can mine phosphorus, radish can break up plow pans, etc. My intention was to hopefully break up the native soil below the soil I imported. I don't have a tiller and it's been lawn since about 1972, so it was fairly compacted. We'll see how well it works. Here's a pic of one of the radishes. They're pretty incredible.

I have three very different, and widely separated, gardens. The one in the picture is right behind my house. There are three plots there under cereal rye. I have only ever had one instance of deer here. I strung up some electric fence tape and they stopped bothering my okra. I didn't even have to attach an electric source. I guess they had prior knowledge of that electric tape. My 1/2 acre garden is in Guthrie proper. I have never had an issue there. Our new 3 acre garden is becoming a real struggle though. I plan to add another wire to that electric fence soon. It will be a horizontal distance of three feet from the current top wire. Wish us luck.

I live in South Carolina and the drop dead best cover crop I have used is Red Clover.Clean Summer garden and lightly till or just break up top 3-4 in. of soil.Just throw seeds out by hand, don't worry about being to close, gently rake in and water.The clover will do everything else.At present my clover is about 1 ft. high with 4-6 in. root system.So thick you can not see the ground. Will till in next 2-3 weeks adding huge biomass to the soil.By Spring planting everything is composted and soil is much improved. Little time and money spent and great improvement to soil.Can buy NOTHING like this in a bag to add to your garden. Drop dead easy!! Rick
