Importing snakes, toads and other beneficial critters

To keep out the voles who decimated some of my veggie beds this year, I'm putting up a trenched-in fence of ¼" (6mm) mesh hardware cloth. However, I've noticed lots of garter snakes, the occasional toad, etc. patrolling the garden and think they eat a lot of slugs and the nasty bugs when I'm not there.

Can I have some neighborhood kids catch some of these critters and place them inside the enclosure (which is about 40' Ã 50')? Should I create some cool places for them (the reptiles, not the kids) to hide on hot days? Do I need to provide any other food for them? Any suggestions about what to add to the "terrarium"?
