Name That Plant!

Plant ID: Pink flowering shrub in Vermont. Picture

This shrub is in bloom now (may 5) in central Vermont near Warren. It almost looks like an azalea, but it has no leaves currently, just the pink blossoms. I don't know the exposure, it's in my brother-in-laws yard, and I'm guessing it's on the North side of his home, but that's a guess. Anyhow. If anyone knows what this is...and if it would thrive in Salt Lake City, Utah, I'd be grateful for an identification.

It might be Rhododendron mucronulatum 'Cornell Pink'. It flowers without foliage which emerges later.
If the flowers are double, it's not that cultivar.

Thanks. I can't grow Rhododendrons here...or azaleas for that matter. Too bad. It's a nice showy spring shrub.

Kolkwitzia would have blossoms with a kind of lips, I think that's not it. It looks a little bit like a Prunus triloba, but the leaves should have a serrated edge. There are some other species/ cultivars similar to it, sorry, cant remember a name. What is the bark like of the thicker stems? Bye, Lin

Although it produces semi-woody stems during the growing season, Gaura is considered an herbaceous perennial and will typically dieback to the root crown or a basal rosette of foliage in winter. It is very particular about drainage and heavy or very damp soils in winter can result in it not reappearing again in spring. Otherwise, it is moderately cold hardy - zone 5.

Thank you Hoovb! After a research I also thought it was very similar to 'Dick Koster'. But the hardiness zone 6b makes me doubt. Montreal's area is technically a zone 5. However winter can be regularly without a good snow coverage acting as a protection. Plants with zone 5 limit hardly live through winter. Thus it's more a zone 4. 'Margo Koster' seems to be hardier than 'Dick Koster' but it's not the right color.

'Cornell Pink' is correct, I have seen this here multiple times.
