My mother used to make something like Runzas - but it was ground beef and breadcrumbs in cabbage leaves. I agree, it will not substitute for spare-ribs.
Runza fast food in your area, here we would go to take-out enchiladas or tacos or chili rellenos - there is a Taco-Wagon in town, not a chain, all is made fresh and very inexpensive, my idea of fast food.

If you lived here, you could get some nice, appetite enhancing Brownies, legally :)

The local bar-b-que place, called "Redneck Bar-B-Q", which operated out of a small shack and only in warm weather months, has not reappeared this year. I can only hope they're late getting set up.

The local Ruritans have a chicken/ribs bar-b-que once a month; it's good, but not quite as good as Rednecks!

I've never heard of "Runzas", but they sound very tasty.

It was a sad day for us when the "downtown" family owned rib joint closed because the owners went into a nursing home. Their grandkids made a mess of the place and it finally closed.
Lucky for us there are at least 1/2 doz rib/chicken wagons setup here and there within a 5 mile radius of our house. All are different and all are excellent.

We used to have a great BBQ place but the owner retired and it never opened up again. After that a couple of people tried, but shoe leather with a lot of BBQ sauce is just not the ticket. Now the run of the mill fast food joints are all over the place.

Bar-B-Q is the south's middle name.
Most places serve it and most places have
Bar-B-Q Baby Back Ribs. My favorite,
messy but good.

George, Neil would be having serious withdrawal
symptoms without his Bar-B-Q fix.

Never heard of Runza's but it sounds like something I would
like. It would be nice to be able to sample other foods
in our local restaurants but most of ours are chains or
the typical southern fare of fried chicken, mashed potatoes,
country fried steak with gravy and biscuits big enough to choke a horse.

We lost a really nice place to the economy. In fact several
places have closed their doors. We don't go out that much
any more but I sure miss it when the choices have been
taken away.

George, with Neil tipping the scales at 135, I am always
pushing milkshakes, ice cream and food at him.
He will eat a whole rack of ribs at a sitting and I am
sorely tempted to put them on the table everyday.

Yes, we get a hankering for some ribs from time to time, but I have not found a rib joint here in Silicon Valley. Plenty of "sprouts" places, but no ribs. So I cook my own. I buy a rack of ribs, cut them into serving pieces, two for me and three for hubby, or whatever fits into my slow cooker. I include one roughly chopped onion and a whole bottle of store bought B-Bque sauce. Cook on low for 5-6 hours. Although they may not be "authentic" B-Bque ribs, they satify us.

west, you make that sound so easy and delicious I might just try it myself. I love anything in the slow cooker, meat just melts in my mouth.

You may have inspired me to get put the crock pot. Seems burger king is selling ribs now. Hmmm.

Don_socal, I find my best ribs at the best price at Smart and Final. But be prepared to do some "butchering" because they include the top of the rib, it's good meat but not ribs and it's hard work to get through the bones to separate the ribs from the meat. I don't mind doing my own buchering.

I often find something called Boston Butt and don't recall that it has bone - for $1/lb. I read just this week to cut it into several pieces to increase the amount of really browned outside edges to enhance flavor. When it is the most tender, pull it apart into shreds with a couple of forks, and slather on the sauce...

I prefer the sweet spicy sauces.... but they are all full of salt... so read the labels.

I never heard of Runzas before, but they sound delicious! When I first moved here my biggest food craving was for barbecued ribs. There were a couple of places near the city that offered ribs, but they weren't like the ones I was used to. But a year or so ago a guy from North Carolina started doing a Sunday barbecue in town. He does great ribs (among other items) and we go about once a month. These days I'm craving corned beef.
