The Preakness: Barbaro's broken leg

Could there have been anything more grim than watching Barbaro pull up with a broken leg today in the Preakness? Apparently it's broken in two places, just above and just below the ankle. The vet, who beleives that it's a very serious injury, says that it's at least career-ending and if the blood supply has been compromised, it could be life-ending.

Barbaro is on his way to New Bolton, the large animal hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, so he is in good hands. I remember when Ruffian, the filly, was sent there when she broke down in a two-hourse race. But they did not have the technology that they do now, and after she broke out of her cast twice, she had to be put down.

I love to watch the Triple Crown races and I always dream of a Triple Crown winner, but when Barbaro pulled up, it took all the starch out of the day. The crowd looked like I felt. Suddenly the fact that he won't win the Triple Crown seems unimportant if he can be saved.
