Love the daffs-ours are long gone here.And the white Dicentra-very pretty...

A dry creek bed is easy to build as long as there is a place for the water to go. We routed the downspouts from our front gutters and the overflow from our water feature to drain here. This also catches all of the run off from our meadow. At the bottom of the slope in my garden above the dry creek, we have a rain garden of plants that like full sun and wet feet in winter, yet won't die in our summer. We already had a ditch, so there was very little digging. We used one pallet of river rock that was around $275 last fall. We used permeable landscape fabric underneath to control the weeds. We don't use fabric in flower beds, BTW! It took 3 of us half a day to do this, but that was with our archaeologist son looking through the stone for arrowheads (which he found). My husband and I didn't mind the slow pace! This was created in September 2006, so the plant material is new. Sidebar: The wire edging is a temporary detterent to deer to keep them from trampling the new plants. It's working so far since everything is deer resistant

Chelone - yes, I use a walker all the time - outdoors at least. (I can use a quad-cane in a house and this house is set up so that I can do some walking around without support...) The main problem with the particular mulch path at that estate was the material was too loose and the base too soft so it took a lot of effort to push the walker. It wasn't quite as bad a pea gravel - impossible to push a walker through that stuff! The path also was a bit too steeply pitched to the sides in places so the walker had a tendency to want to slide sideways. The path was running along a creek, through a wetland area so the ground was quite soft. The same bark over a very firm base would probably been much easier to walk on. My paths here are about 1/3 concrete sand; 2/3 pine bark mulch. Our soil is quite heavy clay so is quite firm - as long as it is not too wet! Only the 'wet corner' area is a problem in the spring. Over time the concrete sand has migrated to the bottom and combined with the clay to make a nice base. The pine mulch - quite fine stuff, not big nuggets - breaks down reasonably fast so it needs topping up every 4-5 years. When we first laid out the paths, we put the mulch/sand mix down and then went over it with one of those water filled roller things to pack it down. Next spring we need to do another layer of the mulch/sand mix on all the paths here. The pine bark keeps the paths looking natural in the woodland areas while the concrete sand gives firmness. In the front garden the paths have been topped up with just the pine mulch so often now that the paths can be a bit too loose in texture. But the clay soil underneath is heavy enough that the path is still quite firm. On the whole, I think the firm base under the surface material is probably the important thing as long as the surface material isn't so thick and loose that the base gets 'lost'. When we put the path material down it was probably no more than 1-1 1/2" thick once it was packed down - maybe less... A couple of years ago the Sweet Woodruff under the pines was starting to spread across the path. I was able to just run the blade of one of those J-shaped crack weeder tools along between the Sweet Woodruff roots and the path surface and peel the SW up and roll it back like a carpet! The path was perfectly smooth and intact underneath - the roots hadn't penetrated beyond the loose surface layer of decomposing pine needles.

Jean is in an older neighborhood above the football stadium. I'm worried about Ione who is out on the flat land near Lebanon. Florence Alabama had a huge slug of water come down stream (Shoal Creek) from Tennessee and the marina our boat WAS in broke loose and got stuck under the US 27 bridges over Shoal Creek Lary drove down to help at where the marina used to be early this am after we had a call that it had torn loose. There was no problem going to Chattanooga and then west because the storm sped up (My roses got 3.06" of rain in 36 hours in two slugs.) Think of the mulch as if it were plastic, it retains moisture and keeps weeds down. I use chips for most larger crops: tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers, and the like. for large transplants I'll lay a bed about 3-4" deep along the row, scrape a 6" diam. hole at the planting site and dig the soil for the rootball. I leave the chips scraped away from the stems of the plants to make a well. for direct seed crops like beans I lay a bed maybe 2-3" deep and either plant into holes in the mulch or hoe a strip down the middle clear to soil and plant just barely into the soil, covering with a layer of chips. The method works well for me because there is very little tilling at the beginning of the season, when spring rains (we have had 3" this week) really wreck a tilling schedule. Less tilling makes for less weed seeds turned up, and those that are get smothered by the chips. As the season progresses, the chips do a tremendous job of holding in moisture to reduce irrigating. I find that with well ground chips, as fall comes around and even overwinter, they have broken down very well. There will allways be a few random larger wood pieces that didn't break down, which I will either rake into the path and rebury, or just till in. I largely do only fall tilling to incorporate soil amendments. My garden is on the small side, but I try to use larger scale production methods as they afford the best return on my time investment. I do all rows, raised slightly, irrigation hoses, and mulch rather than plastic. The mulch works great if its available. I have not noticed a problem with tying up soil nutrients, possibly because the chips are on the soil surface and not incorporated until they are much more decomposed. I haven't had my plants tested, but i figure if they are green, vigorous and productive, they are doing what I hired them to do.

Norma, it's always a treat to see glimpses of your gardens. You hold out on us I fear :) I really like the white dicentra. My dicentras are just starting to bloom. I always look forward to seeing them each spring. You have a great eye for garden design. I love that first picture but too many interesting things in the distance that I can't quite make out. Such pretty plant combos too. I'm so glad Kathy talked you into showing us. I enjoyed the tour. Thanks!

Norma, I've finally had a chance to study your photographs in earnest. And lovely they are indeed!

I'm particularly fond of the Redbud and Dogwood... yummy. And Dicentra is a personal favorite of mine, esp. the white ones. The Narcissus remind me of ballerina tutus, fluffy, soft and luxurious folds of tulle. Very, very pretty.

I cracked up LALATing, too, something more common in the pride here on the compound than with the Huge One, I'm sad to report. Thanks for sharing your little coHnuh of the Idyll domain.

Norma, I was excited to see a small white dicentra blooming in my garden today. I'd forgotten that my neighbor had given me one of her seedlings last year. Does yours seed around alot. She says hers does. Not that I'd mind having a small patch of these.

Mary, I think spring is the best time for my garden as the native dogwoods and redbuds add so much to the overall effect. Some of these trees I nurtured from tiny seedlings.
Its hard to believe that the whole area I garden was once just a patch of mostly cedar trees. I did dig the ponds myself.

Eden I have not had the white dicentra seed around yet.

This year has been so much better than last year because we have had sufficent rain so far. I still have so many projects to finish up though. I'm trying to get to a lot of them before hot weather hits. I'm not as good in the heat as I used to be. Last year I was ready to throw in the towel after a few drought years. I seem to have renewed spirit this year. I think I will try to do more with what I have ( dividing and propagating) and not let the pot ghetto get to big. LOL. I had to wrestle two fairly large shrubs out of the vegie garden because I stuck them there out of desperation. It was hard to find the sunny spots they required.

Norma...what a beautiful property you have! You have some nice changes in elevation that really gives interest, but I think you posted somewhere else that it is not easy gardening there. I have a completely level yard and it can be a little boring. Is that a Bloodgood JMaple in Photo #1? Everything is so pretty. Love your white Bleeding heart. Haven't seen a prettier double Narcissus than yours too. Nice combination putting the white and pale yellow together. I love that shade of yellow.

Norma...everything is gorgeous! I know you hide your light under a bushel basket! :-) You need to share more. You have quite a designers eye; I think! I've always loved your pond area (in every season) and that redbud and dogwood blooming...that is *so* beautiful and brings back many fond memories of visiting mom & dad in Tennessee in spring. Love the black and white scheme and your daffs are gorgeous. And so enjoyed seeing the bleeding hearts too, they have been a favorite of mine ever since I was a little girl.

Anyway...thanks for sharing Norma. It really is a treat!

I don't know how I missed these gorgeous photos. WOW! You have so much blooming already, everything looks so healthy. How old is that red bleeding heart? Looking forward to seeing what summer looks like at Triple Creek.

pm2, That is a Bloodgood JM. It looked so bad all last year after being damaged by the late freeze. I thought I would probably lose it, but it looks great this year except for some small dead limbs in the top that I couldn't reach to prune. I really would like another somewhere else in the garden but haven't figured out a spot.

anitamo, That bleeding heart is only a year old, well maybe a year and a half, but it sure likes that location.
I didn't realise that I planted a red azalea there too, and they clash badly. I can't decide what to do because I wanted the evergreen foilage of the azalea . Guess I need to swap out the azalea for a pink or white one.

Norma..we have a Bloodgood as well and I do enjoy it. Have had it looking like swiss cheese for three years running due to the dreaded winter moth caterpillars that are new to our area. They start eating the leaves just as they are opening and make quite a mess. This year so far, it is actually looking like there is less of a problem, or they are late. Keeping my fingers crossed there are less.

You have such a nice large property. I love trees and would love to plant more if I had the room. There are so many different JMaples, I would be tempted to get a few varieties. :-)
