How to kill weeds and grass before adding soil to raised beds?
Comments (11)I just tilled the lawn and placed the bed on the fresh tilled soil. What weeds grow through 6 inches of fresh soil after being weakened by tilling? Any how it has been two years now and only a very few weeds came through the edges where the soil pulled back when it dries down. They were no problem at all . In fact I wait for the few weeds I have to grow so I have some to pull for old times sake. and yes I have plenty of weeds in my lawn. I do not spray them. Cutting the soil and weed roots to a depth of 5-8 inches along side the beds with a flat spade will stop all the invasive roots from entering the beds. At least where I live. Don't turn the soil just cut and leave in place. Curt...See MoreKilling quackgrass organically
Comments (18)I'm surprised to see a 13yr old thread about quack grass that doesn't include posts from me. [g] I had a huge problem with Quack Grass about 15 years or more ago. I didn't know how bad it was to start. I had it in my vegetable garden. I tried weeding it out and it kept coming back. Then I decided to rototill my vegetable garden. What a mistake that was!! It just cut all the roots up into tiny pieces that all rooted and took off. It was so bad that I gave up my vegetable plot for 2 years. I kept looking online for solutions and something caused me to get the idea to cover it with plastic. Solarization. I had left over 3mil thick clear pliastic from an old ice rink in the garage and I used that to completely cover a 25x20ft vegetable plot one hot summer. I left it on there for a year weighed down with bricks. No holes in the plastic to allow water through. That's what it took. I haven't seen quack grass in my garden since....See MoreHelp me control the weeds organically
Comments (5)Hi Jessica and welcome to your new found interest. Be careful though, gardening can easily and quickly become an obsession! lol As to your weeds and only being organic situation......Well, my advice is give it lots of time, patience, persistence, cardboard/newspaper/paper bags, organic mulches and a stirup/hula hoe is a great tool. Vinegar is helpful in certain situations too. I don't know the condition of your soil or the weeds you are facing. My biggest weed challenge is bermuda grass. Still, all the things I mentioned above are helping me deal with it. I covered my veggie garden area for the first 2 fall/winters I was here with a thick layer of paper and then mulch. Now mind you, last year my garden results were horrible. This past fall the soil was weed free enough that I felt I could get away with only putting down a nice thick layer of shredded leaves and pine straw. My garden is finally looking promising this year! I would imagine your situation is a bit different from mine as I would think your plot has been used in the recent past and it sounds like you have plants growing well already. All I can say is this year hand weed as much as you can. The stirup/hula/scuttle hoe is a great tool for weeding young weeds in good soil. It is a hoe that goes by several names. In the fall put down as thick a layer of organic mulch as you can. All in all though the key is persistence and the realization that there will always, always be weeds. Just hopefully as time goes on there will be fewer and fewer and they will be easier and easier to deal with. Good luck! Comments (4)I have used Roundup around the base of many trees and it has never harmed the trees. I would never (again) use a weed barrier like plastic. I believe the rule-of-thumb for mulching around trees is no more than 6" deep around the tree....See Moredicot
