Springtime - What's Blooming?

Well, spring is officially here although many may look out their windows today and disagree. But it's coming, and soon. The azaleas are blooming, the Japanese magnolias, the last of the season's camellias are brightening up my yard.

What I have noticed most is lots of new root growth as the orchids get ready for their main growing season. It will be so nice to get many of them outdoors again -- mostly vandaceous types and Catt Alliance species and hybrids here -- where a garden hose will make watering a snap.

So, while anticipating warm season blooms, which of your plants are bravely blooming now?

For the freesias - it's not 'elegant' but using a cloche or plastic tunnel to keep off the rain and unexpected frosts can be useful, particulary for the large-flowered coloured varieties. (The cream hardies will probably be fine.) A silty soil suits them very well. Excellent drainage really helps - and a good baking in autumn. Dutch irises do well at the foot of deciduous trees where the roots improve the drainage and they get well-dried over the summer-autumn. We had a damp summer last year and the flower quality this year was really poor. Most of the bulbs mentioned appreciate very good drainage. About the only Narcissus I know to do well in soggy conditions are the 'Erlicheer' ones with green rather than blue-green leaves whose leaves start before all the others and are still hanging on in the middle of summer. They dig down deeply, are happy in cluggy clay, and like being left alone for years to multiply. The others prefer 'lighter' soils - even shingly. Perhaps if you amended your drainage there could be an improvement in survival of cold/damp spells.

How will daylilies bloom if they only get springtime sun??

It's like Rita said. Most Daylilies require as much sun as roses. However I noticed that a couple of my daylilies did remarkably well in a part shade area I have. I arrived at this conclusion when I tried different daylilies in this spot and they didn't flower or form scapes at all. So I put back the old ones and they bloomed like nothing was wrong. Then I read about a list of daylilies that did well in part sun and lo and behold these daylilies of mine that had done well in the part sun area were on the list. The three I have in part sun now (facing west) also happen to be some of my favorite daylilies - who knew? They are Bittersweet Destiny, Green Mystique, Velvet Shadows. Others on the list that I personally haven't tried yet but have repuations as being good daylilies are: Becky Lynn, Betty Warren Woods, Chorus Line, Condilla, Coral Crab, Dragon King, Early Snow, Fairy Tale Pink, Hearts afire, Holiday Delight, Kate Carpenter, Malyasian Monarch, Mary todd, Old Tangiers, Peach Magnolia, Prairie Blue Eyes, Primal Scream, Pumpkin Kid, Siloam David Kirchoff, South Seas, Stella De Oro, Superlative, Susan Weber, Wlaking on Sunshine, Weedding Band, Winsome Lady, Yellow Beauty, Yellow Bouquet....These are older daylilies so relatively inexpensive. You could try a few in pots and see what happens.......Maryl

Susan, Mmmmm...I was looking online for a map of the springtime RTHU flyways map but couldn't locate one showing Oklahoma routes. I am wondering if they even fly thru there early in the season? I find the flyways very interesting and mystifying and I wish someone had some good details to share on them. Anyway, I have read several times that one should go to Home Depot and buy some of that ultraviolet red colored plastic ribbon and tape that road crews use and hang it out in the yard. Many say that works and I do use it (I have some out right now for the fall migrators) but don't know if I get hummers because of it or just becuz... Also, in April when ours are expected I hang on a shepherd's hook in an obvious place a basket or two of red flowers in spring time. They say that hummers have excellent eye sight and can see red (especially ultraviolet) from 2 miles away~~but I'm not sure I believe that!?! And I plant red tulips just to catch their eye too, even though that's not a known hummer flower. And hang out the reddest feeders I have. Best of all for spring I think is a good flowering tree like a red buckeye. Those are a few ideas for you...it seems like they should be able to find you if they are there. I'm going to have to remember that Ortho then and try it early next spring in towards the end of March then before the ladybugs show up. The aphids pretty much ruined the middle of the first flush. By the time I get this huge wave of ladybugs it's too late, they've got the roses just about half clean now but I'd rather not have this problem. I also was gone all of Mar too, so it was out of control. Now, I've got a few roses defoliating from washing them off too much. I have to brush up on my geography, I never thought of Concord as the valley, but I don't think I've ever been there either. I still think you sent them down south past Fresno to me! I should have this huge wave of toads arriving next month along with the preying mantis, that'll help me out considerably. As a 3 year old garden I'm doing everything I can to coax the good bugs to come along since this was all nothing for too long before they built here and orchards before that. I had a huge overgrown white lab that would sprawl out to cool off when we moved here and he discovered cool grass or the cool tile and linoleum in the house:) In the mtns we never had this kind of heat to battle, he had a thick 3" coat that we'd have to shave down here, it was just too hot, my total outside dog became an inside dog when we moved to the valley when he was 6. On his hind legs he could put his paws on my shoulders if I let him, which I didn't, but that's how big he was. He got some of the bad food and died from kidney failure just before he was 10. Oh, I've done a lot of rose moving, the first spring here I had to transplant the first 27 minis I'd planted on the north side of the house and then all the other roses I'd ordered over the winter too:) I've dug all the holes for the roses and we've tried drips and they work at first and then clog with clay particles. Replaced them and try again. Each time I trust them a rose almost dies, so we've gone with the mini sprayers and bubblers and with sprinklers. Originally where my large garden is was all going to be grass, when I saw my husband couldn't maintain that much yard, it was already piped for sprinklers. So, I took 1/3 of the yard for my rose garden. After my dog died I decided to make a memorial for him and hey an excuse to extend the garden to where he used to lay outside the small fence I had and put in more roses and I took another 1/4, this doesn't add up but I now have half the length & width of the back yard as a rose garden. He'd like a vegetable garden but guess who ends up watering it when he doesn't get out there once it hits the 90's and 100's?? I won't give over my rose real estate, I gave him my old mini/shade garden for a vegetable garden at the back of the house:) This process for the 'large rose garden' has taken 3 years, I have a permanent cement border and a wrought iron fence up now, I can't expand any further that I put in last summer, LOL* I did take out two roses and two ornamental grasses this spring and gave to a friend but I still found a way to put another dozen roses in and I'm pretty much finished. I think I can squeeze another couple very small minis in, but other than that, I'm tapped. I think I'm up to just under 90 roses now. I said I'd stop at 50:) I'm hoping I moved and planted the last roses this spring, but I have a feeling you don't ever finish. I also have two small rose beds at the front of the house. You asked and I don't know how to do answer, especially about gardening & my roses:) I do think that newest rose bed is looking really wonderful, by season's end it should be everything you were hoping for when you had to replant it. I wish I had your strength & energy, everything shows the TLC you lavish on it. I do enjoy your pics of your roses and beds and your dog is laughing in that one pic:) I think those vegetables add interest and make a great companion to your roses and an added plus is you like to eat them is perfect. terp, let me know how your Tuberolabium kotoense does. I am considering buying a kotoense (or that other one, quis* something) and like the idea of a Neo potting. I only have two of the mini Tuberolabium species and want to try another larger-growing one.

bob and terp, do either of your violacea v. alba flowers have the greenish tips? I have seen white, white-ish, and white with green tips flowers.

kermit, I envy you the reed stem epidendrums. I used to grow a bunch in my yard in Miami to light things up. But now that I am reliant on a greenhouse in the winter, I no longer have room for them ... sigh.

CJ, I dont' know. I bought it in spike back in October. Hasn't bloomed yet but hasn't blasted the spike either. The lady from where I got it (Seagrove orchids, I think?) is incredibly sweet and actually recognizes me when I pass by at shows. She's really wanting to see a picture when it does finally bloom.

Bob, I can't wait for my Phal speciosa 'C#1' to bloom! The random red spotting just does it for me. Has yours bloomed before? Mine hasn't.

Thanks for the wishes CJ. Honestly I don't really have expectations from it. I just saw it at the orchid show and nabbed it before I could think twice ($60 *eeeeek*). And I felt REALLY bad cause I grabbed it and my Phal Samera right after (and right in front of) I had just told another vendor I couldn't afford one of their violaceas that were a little cheaper.

I will keep you updated on the kotoense! Anything is better than the mount: it was getting watered maybe once every 3 weeks. It looks much better now! And since I did as it began new roots, I'm hopeful for successful transition. If not, more room for another violacea!

WC, that actually sounds right! She's such a gem! I didn't even recognize her as I was perusing her stuff, and she was like "Hey you!!!!" She recognized me as the violacea guy, since we chatted about it for like 15 minutes. She had debunked everything I've ever known about this plant: she says they want LESS light and want it drier than other phals. I've "grown up" in this hobby with everyone and everything saying they want it a little wetter/more humid, and higher light! She said she grew them underneath her mini catts.

Yes, mine has bloomed 2x before and currently has 4 spikes (don't cut the spike!!!). I had issues with the flowers 'cupping' very badly on the last bloom though. On mine not all flowers have the spots, there were a few pure whites each time.

I just moved it from a pot to having it mounted to a tree fern plaque about 6-8 weeks ago and it seems to be doing well. New growth and the 4 spikes still look healthy and may be trying to generate a bud or two.

That picture of her isn't ringing a bell but I also couldn't picture her if I tried. Stitz, WAS that Seagrove all along the front by the cashiers and over to the corner with the tall screen of mounted plants at the MOS show??? I just checked my plants but they aren't labeled with anything Seagrove and I know I've bought stuff from them in the past with the name on the label.

Bob, thanks for the update. Pure white flowers are fine - the randomness and irregularity grab me. No more tree fern for me - it doesn't stay moist enough for more than a few hours.

au contraire, my friend.
tree fern will stay moist after it is a bit "seasoned". I suggest that you repot using it early in the Spring season so that it has an opportunity to acquire a li'l bit of this and that (bacteria stufff) to make it more desirable as a potting medium. I used to have similar thoughts to yours 'til I saw the light. Now, I use it more and more!

If this doesn't work, then it's time to re-evaluate. Give tree fern a chance!

Stitz, I was thinking tree fern mount, which dries quickly here in 17-25% humidity in winter; maybe 30-40% summer.

FWIW: Mine is mounted on a 6" x 6" x 1/2" slab of tree fern with a pad of spagh, watered heavily every 3-4 days in the winter, hopefully much less once it gets outside later this spring. I double checked last night and there is now a 5th spike starting. The new spikes seem very thin and wirey IMO but they seem to easily branch, especially after they have bloomed once. Right now I'm still trying to train some of the spikes to point in the right direction in relation to the mount, using several small wires and such to slowly move them from their original pot configurations.

My leaf spread is only about 6"-8" inches (maybe less) and I have @6 leafs, how about yours?

terpguy, trust me! That foto is Linda Thorne of Seagrove, the beautiful, blonde Orchid Lady from NC. You "located" Linda/Seagrove correctly at the Timonium/MOS venue. My most recent acquistion from Linda included a hand-written label. Perhaps, she ran out? It happens!

Well, this year, I am having some surprise bloomers. I've had a Coelogyne massangeana for the last five years, which I bought when Summerfield Orchids closed. It hadn't bloomed for the owners before, but it was a blooming-sized plant. I kept it under lights in the basement and summered it outside for years, and suddenly, after forgetting to water it for two and a half weeks, I went down into the basement and saw it had a long, abundantly-budded flower spike. I was so excited that I thanked the plant out loud! The goofy thing sprouted and bloomed in under three weeks, without my even knowing until the day before they began to open.

Other than my big excitement with that plant, here are my other bloomers:
