Rainbarrels and Mosquitos

Hello dear Readers,

During the rainy season I use only rainwater for my orchids, therefore, put up several barrels to collect it. After the weather turns a little warmer, I notice tiny swimmers on the bottom of the barrels, which I suspect to be mosquito larvae.

My questions are:

Will the larvae die after taking them out of their wet environment and hence come in contact with the

bark/stone medium? And...

Could you please suggest a safe product to put into the

barrels which would kill them?

Also, I have heard it said, that it is advisable to use a mixture of rain/well water for orchids. True or false?

Thanks for responding.

H.
