What is expensive? There are far more expensive hobbies. You went to an orchid show and only bought two plants?I am not going near the International Orchid Fair to be held later this week. you have got to love that title "International" I suppose they borrowed it from the "World" series of baseball.
Just finished the draft of the schedule of the local orchid society autumn show.
Just called it ...... Orchid Society Autumn Show. You can tell i never worked in marketing in a previous life.

i don't know where you are in MD, but i'm in silver spring, by dc. Theres another show, up at longwood gardens about 2.5 hrs from me. it'll be a big one too, much bigger than the MD show, with better vendors. You might wanna stay away from that one too ;)

You are definitly in the wrong place. Super nice folks here but somehow even reading about Orchids and going to the gallery is WAY too much temptation for me. Always something new I don't have. My list (with pics) must be easily 2 gigabytes.

So I am now investigating cornea donation and nasal by-pass surgery. Possibly some ear surgery just to be safe. I'm afraid its the only way to cure severe OCD! I'll let you know if it works

Can anyone give me advise on "hot-wiring" or lock picking?

With all these - one or two plants here and another one there - I would imagine shipping charges are killing you. Not good.

My problem is that I drive around for my job from nursery to nursery and have several Trader Joes on the way. I found a certain brand of cookies there that I have to have so I get an excuse to go in and look at their orchids. And I have a bad habit of buying orchids when I have a bad day- I trully am addicted. Eventually I won't find anything new and quit buying I suppose...or not...;)

Fortuenatly I am in school all day saturdays so that leaves a lot of shopping time out and most sundays are already taken up with family stuff. Due to shcool, work,eyc I have also sworn off the national captial meetings until fall..at least no more members sales nights for me.

OHG delivers by heated courier truck to Chicago. My neighbour will find out any day now. She keeps on asking what is in those big covered boxes that white truck delivers. She will padlock the front door. (Seedlings by mail slot)?

But I like the wagon for summer! It would have to be a horse drawn wagon.

When I lived in UK I used to drive 100 miles to my nearest orchid nursery to buy some plants. I always wanted to choose then myself and got a lot of invaluable information. Leave it a while. Let your plants grow and see what happens. Also join your nearest Orchid Society, even if its 100 miles away you'll learn a lot and make some really good friends.

All good advice, I do belong to my society and have helped out at the shows, auctions etc.It's just school (I have gone back at my age LOL, actually I'm graduating this spring at 51) work, etc have made it difficult to get to the meetings and get an orchid fix.
I have ruptured a disk in my neck and am facing surgery.the recovery time will cut into my income which means the work to turn my front porch into a sunroom/plantroom has stopped. We had enlarged the original concrete slab to 20" x 11' and have the roof up. Enclosing it was the next and most expensive step. As a consolation we have double the avaliable size for my light bench in the basement and will be putting a small plastic "greenhouse" on the porch for the orchids to stay in during the fall so that they can get the cool nights without wind or rain on them. My old one had been scrapped when we did the enlargments as we hoped to be glassed in by then.

Check out Hoosier Orchid in Indianapolis; they offer several orchid packages. Last week I purchased a dual-spiked Cymbidium 'Nut' from Erich and it is gorgeous.
