Help with nomenclature please.

Please humour me here. Can you help me with some US/Brit translating please?? I often see posters referring to plants having a 'stock' where I would use the word 'stalk'. Can you enlighten me as the whether the word you would use is actually 'stock' or is it an example of people writing 'stock' because they pronounce it the same as 'stalk'. The 2 words sound completely different in my accent - 'stock' like 'mock' and 'stalk' like 'pork'. (If you follow what I'm trying to say here!) Another one I've noticed is the use of 'wheel barrel' rather than 'wheel barrow'. Again, is 'wheel barrel' the word they mean or is it a case of writing what it sounds like? Please don't interpret this query as critical. I find this all fascinating (My first degree was in linguistics - I'm just curious) Oh, and another question. Measurements in feet. Do you ever use yards?
