Name That Plant!

This Grassy Weed is infesting my lawn!

Your help in identifying this is appreciated. I'm between quackgrass or perennial/annual rye. There is a very slight tinge of purple/red in the white area of the stem near the root but it is mostly white. Some of them have a fuzzy/hairy stem at the bottom up until the first blade. Also, I'm not knowledgeable enough to determine if the horizontal roots on my picture are actually roots, or if they're the telltale rhyzomes of the dreaded quack grass. What's weird is that these weeds definitely pay attention to the border with one of my neighbor's yards so it makes me wonder if it's something the previous owners of my home planted before I moved in last fall.

The upper growth does not look like the quack grass I'm fighting off, but I am sure that QG has relatives that are equally evil.

5 or 10 minutes of water probably is not enough for a lawn, especially one in full sun. Most all of the studies I have seen talk about a lawn getting an inch of water per week, depending on the temperature, drainage, etc. and here that takes about an hour to deliver. Then comes the question what does a good, reliable soil test say about your soils pH and nutrient supply? How much organic matter is in your soil? What kind of life is in that soil? How well does that soil drain? Get the soil into a good, healthy condition and a good lawn that is more "weed" free will follow. Spraying poisons around to attempt to control unwanted plant growth, "weeds" is a waste of time, energy, and money.

Most all lawn seed mixes I have seen contain some Kentucky Blue Grass, some kind of Fescue, and some Perennial Rye and some even have annual bluegrass. Glyphosates will kill everything it is sprayed on and is considered by the World Health Organization as a potential carcinogen, probably not the best material to use to kill plants. Fescues are fairly wimpy and covering them with an impervious (sunlight proof) covering for a couple of weeks will kill them and allow reseeding right away, something plant poisons may not allow. kimmq is kimmsr

yes just use sedgehammer or generic equivalent. Might have to treat the worst ones twice. Be sure to use the correct surfactant/spreader. Pulling leaves plenty of "nutlets" in the soil to continue growing, OTOH using the proper selective means those get systemically killed off with the main plant. (more or less)

Looks like bermuda grass.

edit: Or maybe crab grass? (I have both of these types in my lawn and hate them both) I'm comparing pictures of bermuda and crab, and yours looks more like crab grass

Crab grass doesn't have the rhizomes (thank God).
