Wallpaper on new sheet rock
Comments (19)The point is, wallpaper has a bad rep because of nightmare removal stories that you have heard for decades. This was because when we made the transition from plaster to drywall, we didn't make the transition from using sizing (to be used when papering over plaster) to using a wallcovering primer (to be used when papering over drywall). You would even go into paint stores and ask the people there what to use when you wanted to hang wallpaper on your drywall and they would say here, have some sizing. Now, thankfully it's hard to even find sizing in the paint stores, but the damage has been done. I still have customers saying to me, 'I know the wallpaper will come off easily because we used sizing.' Well sizing was the wrong thing to use. Anyway, nowadays if you use a wallcovering primer, it's easy to strip the wallpaper when you are ready to take it down and there are some really nice high end wall coverings you can buy that really can make a room look fantastic....See MoreSheet rock repair found termite damge - how can I repair this?
Comments (4)I posted in a bit of a state of panic. Sorry. The damaged area is directly under a window that held an ancient air conditioner for years. It's a small area between the window and the top of a built-in radiator. The area was damp and another forum suggested that it is carpenter ant damage as they like wet areas. I've seen one or two of them here over the years, but I think they are pretty much gone. It was suggested I put down boric acid, stuff it with insulation and go ahead and put the sheet rock repair back up. (and probably pray for the rest of the house, but I can't do anything about that.) Here is a link that might be useful: Pictures - right side up, it's a long thin area...See MoreContractor using normal grey sheet rock in bathroom
Comments (4)Where’d you find this guy, and how much are you paying for the project? Craigslist and 4K is a big difference than your neighbor and 14K, or your HVAC guy’s reccomendation and 19K. The chancesof you dealing with a hack lessen as you move up the food chain. But you have the warning signs of having a hack. Pictures and further explanations could confirm or deny....See MoreSheet rock behind the refrigerator necessary?
Comments (3)Removing the drywall may give you the space, but its hard to know whats inside that wall that will now be exposed. There may be water pipes, vents, recessed cabinet for an ironing board, etc. You do not want to cut or damage anything. If you have the space, I would remove the drywall and then install vertical nailing strips inside the studs, which would allow you to screw drywall back in between the studs. This would make the drywall even with the stud surface, and get you about 1/2" of space back (the thickness of the drywall. I just prefer to have the wall cavity covered, even if its not visible. Heat rises, so for venting I would look at cutting square holes on both sides and installing standard finned vent covers in the wall, which would let heat escape through the wall. However, it would also allow noise from the laundry room to come into the kitchen when a washer or dryer is running. It may be a little quieter if you put the refrigerator side vent close to floor level and the laundry room vent up high, and let the wall cavity be the interconnection. Bruce...See Morebyron
