What is best apple to grow organic? There are old apple trees in

nearby farms that make lots of apples with no care, they are just

small, irregular and spotted, but I don't know the variety.

Are there any types you can suggest that would produce without

much spraying, would store well over winter, and would only need

one tree?

I don't have enough sun for 2, although I have ancient huge ones

that only have a few apples, and a tiny 25 year old one that doesn't

get enough sun and only has a few apples.

I wonder what apple trees were grown in the old days before they

did so much spraying and when they stored them in root cellars for

winter.

Would it be best to have a thick layer of leaves, grow grass, or what

surrounding the base of the apple tree?

Thanks in advance for you suggestions.
